Default Canon 5D and Lens Combination

Once again, I am upgrading my equipment. Retiring an XT, so my wedding arsenal will be a 20D, 30D, 40D and a new 5D.

I LOVE my 40 D 17 - 55 f/2.8 IS USM camera/lens combination, however, I can not use this lens on the 5D.

Can someone suggest a lens combination that they absolutely LOVE that would give me the same results I get with my current setup?

Canon 5D with 85 1.2 Mk2

I worship this setup now.

Wow.

the 24-70 2.8L is also stunning on it. 24 is nice and wide, while 70 becomes a decent portrait lenght. I prefer the 2.8 over the 24-105 4L for events, as the extra stop helps.

I just picked up the 5D kit - really like the 24-105 L IS... IS but only f/4 - If you loved the 17-55 then I think the 24-70 may be the one for you (f/2.8 but no IS).

If you need the F2.8: EF24-70F2.8L USM, a little wider and a little shorter on the 5D as the 17-55IS on the 40D (~27mm - ~88mm FoV), or if you prefer the IS: EF 24-105F4L IS USM, again a little wider, this time also a little longer , but one stop slower .

'Cheaper' option: TAMRON 28-75F2.8 XR Di etc...

...€0.02...

I would say 24-70. Imo, and if budget permits, it should be the base & first lens one buys with a camera.

The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is supposed to be a really hot lens. The reviews are great and the price is excellent. It'll be my next lens (maybe if my wife lets me spend my tax refund on it). Other than the primes, my most consistant lens is my 28-135 IS. It has become my walk-around lens on my 5D.

Max, the two lenses you mentioned are the lenses I use. I rarely put my 85mm f/1.8 on the camera.

I am just frustrated. I don't seem to be able to find the exact lens I want that will give me all the things the 17 - 55 f/2.8 IS USM lens did. GRRRRRRR.

So what I can decipher out of all the lens quagmire is that VC in Tamron stands for Vibration Compensation and they only have that on one lens. Sigma offers OS...Optical Stabilzation. Just a note because I get lost in all of the letters following a lenses name.

Maybe I am underselling myself and the image stabilization isn't as necessary...or why wouldn't more products carry it. Besides the obvious expense.

Yeah...okay...so this is me talking to myself...but that is okay...I like the company. So I was just thinking...in a wedding shoot, I am strapped with the 40D 17-55 f/2.8 combo and the 5d has the 70 - 20- f.2.8 combo and I can wait on the lens. I just think that the f/2.8 is more important for wedding photography by natural light than the IS would be, so eventually grabbing the 24-70L.

It is all just a bunch of marketing ploys anyway, so we can constantly spend our money while we spin our wheels.

You know Max, I think I'll just wait until September. I have heard the rumblings of the 7D being released...but it could be just a bunch of rumor. I bought my 30D and then three months later...viola...the 40D appeared...which is why I ended up with both. I should probably sell that 30D since I have never used it but just a few times. It probably has less than 1,000 clicks on it.

That will be a killer lens. But why 7D, sounds like a downgrade from the 5D according to Canon's model numbering.

7D rumors are perpetuated by things like this. How real is this? Who knows...it is the internet.

Just an opinion: The 24-105 on a 5D is not a stop slower than the 17-55 on a cropper because the stop you lose on the lens is compensated by the option of using a faster ISO due to the larger sensor's noise characteristics. Sure you would like to keep that f/2.8 and gain something but take some pleasure in the fact that you can use flash on some shots and ISO 800 on others.

Part of me wants a 5D but the other part says wait and see 7D. The question will be how many 1 series features make the trip to the new model or if they just tweak the pixel count. I can wait and see.
