Okay, I give up. How do you use this stupid live view feature on the 40D? They aren't going to make me actually read the manual, now, are they?

Ok, JD. I just got the 40D right before Christmas and have played a bit with the Live View so here goes:
Press the menu button Toggle to the 6th icon from the left Scroll down to the 6th item down, which is Live View function settings Press the Set button to select Press again on the Live View shoot item and Enable it Press Menu to exit In any Creative Zone setting, press the Set button to enable/disable Live View One catch with Live View is that you have to manual focus even if your lens is set to AF. :-( I hope that helps, JD! |

You are right. But once you activate live view you won't be able to auto change focus to another subject. So if you want to use AF you'll have to toggle LV off and on every time you want to change the focus. At least this is what I have seen with my limited use of LV so far.

The Live View part of the manual is 7 pages with pictures, JD. It's one thing to read and not understand, but to not read at all
You could have had your answer much faster. Custom Function III; 6 - AF during Live View Shooting : Enable You can autofocus anytime you want with liveview. Push the AF-On button and it will drop the mirror and reaquire focus. When it beeps let off the button. I highly suggest reading the manual of this piece of machinery. At least Live View and Custom Functions. |

Jeez. Easy-to-use feature. Well, I guess the last remaining place to put a button on the back of the camera was already taken by Direct Print. Now that's a feature we all use every day! ![]() Thanks, transcape. ![]() |

I believe that after you do everything in the menu to enable live view, all you have to do from then on is press the round button in the middle of the dial to turn it on and off. I use it all the time and that's all I do. Just press the round button on the back.

I should have been clearer in that the steps I listed are a one-time setup to enable LV. But once setup, all you have to do is press the round Set button to turn LV on/off.
As far as AF, it is done by dropping the mirror as described by Evoryware. Of course when the mirror drops, your LCD no longer displays the scene so you can't exactly see what you're focusing on unlike a typical digital camera where the display stays on the whole time. There's a whole lot of mirror clicking on/off and that bothers me. I'm seeing more chances for wear&tear with all the moving parts. But that's just me. Again, I will disclaim that is from someone with just a few months of 40D use. I love it though! ![]() |

egads - have I mentioned that my favorite camera is sitting on the desk next to me with a dislocated MIRROR...
I'm not liking all the mirror clicking either. In my present state it makes me agitated. lol |

JDArt,
I sympathize with you. I got my 40D in November and also couldn't figure it out, until I read the manual in disbelief how many thing had to be set to "ON" before it would work. It is almost the feature can be dangerous to either the photographer or the subject and they REALLY want to make sure you REALLY want LV. LOL |

....not to the photographer or to the subject , but to the sensor : overly active use of LV will shorten it's life, as 'permanently emitting' it gets much hotter than is good for it ....risks: hot/stuck pixels, physically damaged sensor units... I really wonder how the 450D will do in that regard, more so as it is aimed at the 'P+S upgraders' that are even more 'used' to 'LV' as most 'P+S' have abandoned viewfinders in favor of larger LCD's altogether... ...€0.02... Kindest regards! Max@Home |
