I've never shot tethered before and really don't have a clue on how to do it. Can someone help me out here with the items necessary to perform the task and what software do you use for instant viewing?
The reason for wanting to do is that I have an upcoming Dance Studio shoot where there will be like 35 girls with individuals and group shots. So, lots and lots of pictures. My wife helps with this and last year I'd pass her the CF card after the group was finished and she would download into folders for viewing and ordering by the mothers there. So, I'm thinking that shooting tethered would allow your real time viewing and sorting to save her time. Craig __________________

If you have a 5D or a 30D, then the software that came with them should be what you need. See the 2nd post here....
40D Tethered Should be the same for you |

...that is actually very easy: what you need is a USB2.0 cable, which, if not 'active', can be maximal 5 meter long, with the mini-USB plug that goes into your cameras on one side, and a regular USB plug that fits your PC/Laptop on the other side. Install EOS Utility and ZoomBrowser from the CD of the latest camera (30D), then go to the Canon website and download and install their latest versions. Power up your PC, plug your camera in, then put it On: your PC should now recognise the camera and either start up EOS Utility, or give you the option to do so, then go to 'Camera Settings/Remote Shooting' Follow the on-screen instructions, but basically after that you can start shooting ![]() But for the record: under the 'Preferences...' button you will find all kind of settings as to how the files should be stored: in-camera, on-disk or both, and you can specify a specific download-path-folder. You an also specify a Browser to your liking, but for first (installation-)use, make sure ZoomBrowser is available on the PC , and many more settings...Please note, that when a camera is attached, you can control almost anything from the PC also, great for Macro or shooting with the camera - on a tripod / - in studio or - both ![]() The 1D(s) Mk III, 40D and 450D also now offer LiveView: look on your monitor and see what your sensor is seeing, with live-histogram and all, before the shot is taken: for this feature to work, LiveView has to be 'Enabled' on-camera first, but does not have to be 'active' yet, you can control that from the PC ![]() Please also note, that you can now easily synchronise the time of both cameras with your PC: this is very handy when you use two cameras in a single shoot/event, and want to view the images in the correct chronological order ![]() And finally pleae note, that you can add your name/tag/company to your camera, and to the EXIF of every image you take with it afterwards, great for © reasons , this can be done when the camera is attached and On and you go to the tab with the hammer-and-plyers ('settings') logo....just find the CD, that is probably the hardest part ![]() ...€0.02... And my kindest regards! Max@Home |

Although I have been shooting Canon digital for a few years, I just got around to downloading the software that came with my 10D, 5D and Digital Rebel XT, last week. Then I simply connected to the computer with the cable that came supplied with the camera, USB/Mini-B and opened up EOS Utility while in DPP. It took a little while to figure out how things worked, but, it works very well. You have to actually take a shot before it shows up on the computer screen, then just keep shooting. I also downloaded to my old Toshiba laptop, had some problems and had to do an uninstall/reinstall. Works great. I now plan to shoot my next set of In-Church wedding formals while teathered.
