Default Information on 40D Please.

Can anyone let me know if the 40D has the ability to take multiple exposures on the same frame ?

Many thanks.

No. That is better done in post processing when shooting digital.

G...99 Perhaps I didn't word my question properly. I have seen cameras that have the ability to show movement across and within a picture (Moon moving in stages etc). Am I able to "Shoot the moon" wait while it moves across the sky then shoot again on the same frame?

The answer is still no.

If you want that, you take several images, and in post processing, you "make" what you want....

Film cameras can be set to do "multi exposures". You throw a switch (or push a little button) to let you cock the shutter but without advancing the film. IF nothing else moves but the moon AND the combination of all the exposures adds up to a properly exposed picture, it will work.

Since there's no film to advance (or not advance) with digital you can do the same thing by putting the camera on a tripod, and taking a sequence of pictures as the moon moves without moving the camera. Then you put each picture on a layer and erase all but the moons in each one (except the first layer of course.)

Here the photographer took a quick series of shots without moving the camera, then added just the skier from the other pics, each on a separate layer.

The trick will be to anticipate where to point the camera so that you catch both the beginning and ending point of the moon phases.

Considering that the D40 does have a Bulb exposure mode there is a way, well sorta... Set the camera up with the shutter set for 'bulb' Open the shutter then cover the lens with an opaque barrier (traditionally a felt hat was used, or at least that was the way I was taught) Remove and recover the lens for each 'exposure'.

Another method is to use the bulb mode and a very dark room and a strobe.

If I wanted to have multiple images today I would use PhotoShop.

I have done this using film but I remember reading the Nikon D80 review and it has a feature "Image Overlay" that does the digital equivalent in camera. Just wondered if the 40D had it.

The Nikon uses the same process as the Photoshop process described above by Goofup, but instead of doing it on your computer you're using the tiny screen on the back.

The D40 is a Nikon model, not Canon.

The 40D could do what you're describing but will drain the battery fairly quick for a sequenced moon series. The moon moves a full diameter every two minutes. Assuming at least a full diameter between four moon shots, that's a 12+ minute exposure on BULB. Most night long exposure shots on digital are done with an AC adapter or battery grip. And long exposures can also introduce noise into the exposure moreso than a series of standard exposures.

Also, the cover method will not give a consistent exposure of each moon shot, especially if it's a full moon, which requires a fairly fast shutter speed.

Thanks for the comments. I am in the middle of a crisis!!! I want to upgrade but can't make my mind up whether to go for the 40D. I have had the 400D for just over a year now and although I am generally satisfied with the camera output I am very unhappy with the ease with which the ISO can be accidentally changed especially if, like me, you are left eye dominant. I swear to you my nose has a mind of it's own. It can select ISO and switch from 100 to 1600 without me batting an eyelid.
The amount of times I have been "In the zone" shooting away only to find that after a couple of shots "it" has selected a higher rating and ruined the whole thing. I have tried everything other than amputation. I use the Nikon eyepiece which stands off better than the Canon, (Unlike the Canon extender it magnifies and gives a very good view). I try to position the offending appendage so carefully that I am begining to get funny looks but blow me (pardon the pun) it happens so often it is spoiling the whole experience. For the want of a menu lock option on the 400D a pretty lame reason for the upgrade but when I saw the 40D had a repositioned switch and a viewfinder ISO display I decided to go for it (I think).
P.S. Sympathy and understanding only please I have had all the No(i)se Ninja etc jokes so many times I think I am being picked on (There I go again).
