Thanks Paul,
Wow! What a difference!! So it IS my use of PS...I've been doing a lot of my adjustments in the raw converter and I thought I noticed this softness when I started using PSCS2. I'll have to look much more carefully at your settings. If you have any comments about what you think I was doing, they would be much appreciated!! Beth __________________

just convert your raw file and in photoshop set the settings I have there for the scaled down photo and it should look the same. As for doing the larger file, I would have to go back and open the file I saved and see what settings for USM are the best. |

OK,
For the full size USM change the first number to 250 and leave the others the same and your large file will look good. |

Thanks for all your time and input! It's really helpful!
I am shooting lots of these images for stock and the companies I upload to on the net require NO sharpening. Now, they look great once sharpened, but awful unsharpened. My question is, "Why do they look so soft before sharpening? Shouldn't they be less soft right out of the camera if the camera and lens are working as designed?" Many of my images may be rejected, if I can't get them to look better right out the camera without sharpening!! My 1D was much better despite the higher noise levels! |

1 - you are shooting in raw mode and therefore the sharpening and some other settings do not effect the file 2 - the filter in front of the sensor softens the file a bit. |

I've got the same lens and totally unscientifically, and very subjectively, yours seems a lot softer than mine. Perhaps I missed an earlier post, but are you using it stopped down?
I used mine for about 600 pics over Christmas and New Year whilst in Egypt (it's great for the enormous temples and monuments there) and generally stopped it down by at least one stop, and often two. I shot in RAW & JPG (ie both at once) and pictures were sharp out of the camera. The flowers in your pics do seem very soft.... I haven't really tried mine yet on flowers etc... Alex |

I picked up my copy last month and I haven't stopped shooting with it! It has the sharpness of an "L" lens and it is very lightweight! it's on my 20D all the time!
Cheers, Sam |

Maybe your problem with your 10-22 is refraction. I notice the picture you have taken was taken at F16. I have heard that with this lens (Super Wide Angle) F8 will give you near endless DOF anyways, so there really is no need to stop it down any further.
I find my 10-22 to be sharpest at about F5.6 at all focal lengths. |

I wasnt happy with mine either.* It seemed dull and not very sharp especially at low fstops.* I sent it to canon for repair and they adjusted it.* It is SHARP SHARP SHARP now.
