Hello,
I have a canon 40d and a Sigma Super 500DF flash. I have been told I can get the 40D internal flash to trigger the Sigma flash. I read the manual, but I can't figure it out how to do it. Anyone successfully accomplished this? Cheers Ric __________________

I'm not familiar with the Sigma flash. But it would need either to be compatible with the Canon eTTL system or it would need to have both an optical slave and the ability to ignore the pre-flash from the 40D's built in flash.

It can only trigger externalflashes with a master flash (550ex/580ex/580exII/MT24ex/MR14ex) in it's hotshoe, or with the dedicated unit (ST-E2). Third-party flashes would need an optical slave trigger, but must be able to identify the Canon pre-flash, otherwise they will kick in too soon... AFAIK no such flashunits are available for purchase on the market. ...€0.02... Kindest regards! Max@Home |

...as said, as an optical slave it would have to recognize the preflash of the Canon E-TTL system...
...if it does not (which I suspect) then the slave will go off too soon... ...€0.02... Max@Home |

There is no pre-flash in manual mode, though that would only be for a shoe mount. Anyway, there are many flashes that claim to ignore the digital preflash out there, in fact, I seem to remember some inexpensive Canon flashes designed to work as optical slaves with Powershot cameras.

OK, in the compatibility list above, There is a note that definitively says that, no it cannot trigger it with the pop-up flash by itself. Like Max, said, there is no manual flash mode with with the pop-up flash. There are a ton of alternate solutions to off camera flash at Strobist.
