Default 10D to 20D... Advice needed...

Hi, I have had the 10D for almost 1.5 years and have the itch to upgrade to the 20D. I know that most likely come Feb or Mar (4 months from now) a new model will come out to replace the 20D. I don't know if it is worth the upgrade to the 20D or if I should just hold off and wait for the next new model... Any others here have jumped from the 10D to the 20D? was there much of a difference? For those who have made the upgrade, where are the main differences you noticed between the two cameras and do you feel it was worth the upgrade?
Thanks for the input..

Scott

I had the 10D for about the same amount of time. This summer I started looking at the 20D and planned on upgrading to it. In a lot of ways, there is very little difference in the 10D and 20D as far as quality of images goes. The 20D gave better focus and a bit better lattitude and a few other features. So instead of getting the 20D I went ahead and went for the 1DMKII, which had the faster autofocus and frames per second that I need for the type of shooting I do a lot of. I went ahead and got it even though I knew that the next version was going to be coming out in a few months. But getting a $500 rebate back was much more attractive to me than waiting. And I knew the 1DMKII was still going to be a fantastic camera even after the next model came out.

My advise: if you do not immediately 'need' another/a new camera, wait till feb/march next year, and see what comes then. If the '30D' does not appear, the 20D will still be a little less $$/€€, if the '30D' does appear, you have more choice, and 20D will be even cheaper )

About the 10D -> 20D upgrade: I did that, after about 10 months and +10.000 10D shots. For me, it was fully worth the upgrade: the 20d feels so much more responsive, is so much faster with 'everything', focusses more precise and faster (especially with F2.8 and faster glas), and 'meters' way better (less blown highlights). Also, IMHO, the 'Dynamic Range' is a tad better, maybe only 2/3 - 1 stop, but better nevertheless.

...*my* opinion, *my* €0.02 worth...

kindest regads,

Max@Home

Ok, I just ordered the 20D today (yay) but I'm not upgrading other than I'm going from an ok film camera to the 20D.

My thoughts...likely not worth anywhere near $0.02, but I'm giving them anyway.

If you are able to take good pictures with the 10D, keep it and wait. How much money do you comfortably have to spend right now and how much would you maybe have if you keep saving till next year when the new one might come out. If it doesn't, like Max said...the 20D will be cheaper then and you won't have lost anything since it isn't as if you are sitting around with a bad camera or without one at all. If there are some things that you absolutely can't stand about the 10D, are they solved with the 20D? Do you think you'd be happy getting the 20D right now and then in a few months seeing something come out that is in your price range and has even more nifty features that maybe you could make good use of?

Personally, since you have been happy with the 10D for so long I would say don't scratch the itch just yet. Be patient and see what happens next year and then make your decision based on what does or doesn't come out so you can then feel you have made a more fully informed decision I guess you could say.

Thanks guys for the input. My main reason for looking at an upgrade is the low noise on higher ISO and faster and more accurate focusing. Also the 5 fps would be nice.

I'm also sitting here with a perfectly good 10D, but considering more camera. I will bypass the 20D however and either go with a 5D or leap to the 1D Mk II ... just haven't figured out which features appeal to me the most at this point as both cameras have their pros and cons.

Hehe...here in Oregon they just upped the minimum wage to the highest in the US...I think I may be lagging behind. *

Thank you, I too really do hope that my new camera and lenses will make my project more possible than it ever would have been without them. *I have a feeling that it will work well and I just hope it is a big hit with the people I end up helping. *

Default Don't "upgrade" to 20D - get an additional 350D

I decided not to get a 20D to replace my 10D but, to get a 350D as an additional body.* The sensors and image quality of both cameras are very much the same and except for a few points (faster burst speed for one - 3200 ISO for another) there is not, IMO, enough difference between the 20D (which will probably be replaced in the Spring if Canon follows their normal ways) and the 350D to justify purchasing the 20D.

If I were truely desiring to "UPGRADE" I would seriously look at a full frame DSLR.*

Much is said about the size of the 350D!* I think that the problem is not with the size of the camera but with the way the photographer holds it.* I wear U.S. size extra-large gloves and have no problems at all with holding the camera.* In fact the size and weight is an added bonus when carrying two bodies equipped with lenses.

Much is also said about the 350D "feeling" cheap.* I don't get that feeling with the black 350D.* I did get the cheap feeling with the faux-silver 300D and still do with the faux-silver 350D. They both look like toys to me.

Economically, a new 350D body doesn't cost much more than the difference between selling your 10D and buying a new 20D body.

In the days of film and the supremacy of prime lenses, most professional photographers who used 35mm carried more than one body.* I cannot emphasize how free it feels to have two different lenses instantly available.* Even when using zooms, it is great to have two different bodies.* I have an older camera strap (OPTECH, I think) that allows me to easily carry 2 bodies and lenses.

My favorite 2-body/lens combinations are:

* 17-40mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/4L - The 40-70mm gap doesn't bather me when I have both lenses instantly available.

* 50mm f/1.8 Mark-I and 28mm f/1.8 Sigma - great combination for available light

* 70-200mm f/4L (with or without 1.4x TC) and 400mm f/5.6 Tokina ATX SD - I have a plate to mount both these on my tripod

With your lenses, I could see many great 2 lens combinations:

17-40 f4L and 70-200mm f/2.8 Sigma EX HSM; 28-75 f2.8 Tamron XR Di and 70-200 f2.8 Sigma EX HSM; or a couple of your long telephotos mounted on one tripod.

Additionally, having 2 bodies minimizes lens switching in the field with all the problems that could entail (dirt, dropping lens, etc.).

There is one other advantage in having 2 bodies.* It is a great insurance policy should one body crap out. I had the 10D crap out once for no apparent reason. Canon fixed it under warranty - but I had no camera for a week.* What if I had been on a trip.* I never cease to wonder about folks who will spend big bucks on a photo trip to an exotic place like Africa and spend more big bucks on a great battery of lenses and then make the trip with only one body.* Wow! Is that confidence or lack of foresight?

All in all, I believe that the advantages of owning and using 2 bodies far outweighs any advantage that the 20D would have over the 350D.

By the way, my two second-party lenses (Tokina & Sigma) work fine on my 10D but, not well at all on the newer 350D.* The fault is in the interface and since they are both discontinued lenses, it would be difficult, if not inpossible, to have them rechipped for the newer model Canon cameras.

Thanks rpcrowe for that reply. I have thought about that, getting the 350d but there a couple of things which have stopped me. The slower frame burst and the batteries. I like the 5 fps of the 20d and also the batteries on the 20d are the same as the 10d.... The size I could have managed to deal with. I do alot of bird flight shots and the 5fps will really help. A friend has the new 1d mkII N and with its 8.5 fps he is killing me > The price tag on that camera is over my head though right now. I cant wait to see what comes out in the spring, like you said the replacement should be in Feb/Mar.....
I guess I have some things to think about

Having owned the 20D for over 12 months now, if there is one thing that I like a lot with the 20D, its the much improved focus accuracy over the 10D/300D. YMMV
