Default canon 20D users-how to do a firmware update

i am getting ready to use the camera for the first time. the manual says i need a cardreader to do a firmware update. surely there is a way to do this without a card reader. then again maybe there isnt.

Nope. You download it to your computer, then transfer that file to a formatted CF card. Then you install the card into your camera and turn the camera on. The firmware will install itself.

I've always used a card reader, but if you hook up the camera to the PC via USB card, does the PC recognize the camera as a harddrive? If so, you could just drag and drop (copy/paste). That's how I do it with the reader. For what it's worth, a reader is only 30 bucks or so and is a much easier way to transfer photos to your puter IMO.

I don't know how to do what you are asking. ... However, I did a search on google and here is a link that has some directions.

Hope this helps.
