Default 30D 1.6 crop

what can I do to compensate for the 1.6 crop on the 30D?

For a given lens focal length, multiply by 1.6 to get the effective FOV. For example, when using a 50mm lens, it is cropped by the decrease in sensor size to effectively be 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm...the same FOV as if an 80mm lens was placed on a full frame camera.

Your cropped body does not magnify...it crops the image circle created by a given lens...this means that tele lenses have more reach, and wide angle lenses are not as wide. A cropped sensor is great for shots requiring lots of reach, and for photographers that are not willing to pay thousands of $'s for a 400mm, 500mm, or 600mm tele lens.

So if you want the reach of say 80mm, then use a 50mm lens. If you want the reach of 160mm, then use a 100mm lens, etc, etc.

You have to be more specific as to what you are compensating for. If it's field of view, then do as Pavel recommended. If it's DOF, use a CoC compensated calculator like this one. If its "magnification" remember that the crop factor only "magnifies" when printing like sized prints. Subjects in the viewfinder are not closer on your 30D than with a film camera, using the same lens. A 50mm is still a 50, and provides normal, or no magnification. But, and it's a big but, the field of view is noticeably smaller on a 30D, so much so that something like a 30 or 35mm lens will probably get you that "50mm feel." Personally, I don't get my head involved in the confusion of cropped sensors and their 35mm equivilent, sticking to figuring out what focal length will give me the FOV and working distance I need to take the shot.

What are you looking to compensate for? Do you want to get more of the scene? Do you want less depth of field? Something else?

Yes I would like to get more of the scene. I also have a Canon Rebel G, Tamron 28-300mm, Tamron 28-75mm and I get a wider wiew with the rebel. Would I have to go with a lens wider than 28mm or just move back? Indoors I'm limited to how far back I can move.

Hi devinezx9rr,

Yes, to get the same angle of view of say the 28-75 you would need a lens that is 28 / 1.6 = ~18mm to 75 / 1.6 = ~48mm, that is why the new 'kitlenses' are 18-55 ones giving the view of a 28-90 lens...

If you do not need that wide end often, a kitlens (Canon EF-18-55 F3.5-F5.6 II, preferably the USM version) new for ~$150, cheaper 2nd hand , can be a good and cheap alternative.

...and outdoors you can step back, or use a tripod and stitch..

...*my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

You basically answered your own question. Shorter focal length lens or back up.

You need to get yourself an 18.75mm lens - That's the trade-off with the smaller sensor's 'crop factor'. On the other hand you do gain on the telephoto end of a lens.

I have both 35mm film and a crop body digital (20D), and that was the first thing I had to deal with when I went over to digital a couple of years ago. You just have to spend the money on wider lenses I'm afraid.
