Default 10d remote capture

I am wanting to begin to use the remote capture feature on my 10d. The 4ft pc to camera cable that came with the camera is really too short for my operation. I do not have a notebook so I will have to connect to a pc which is not convenient to my shooting table. I have searched several places for the maximum length allowed between the camera and pc. Could someone give me some insight on this subject I have thought about extending the length with a usb cable attached to cable that came with the camera. Thanks for any information you can provide. David C

I'm not sure, but I'll be waiting for the answer, too. I use EOS Remote Capture extensively, and even with a notebook, the cord isn't quite long enough for my liking.

Hi station, hi jfrancho,

apart from a Canon-gearhead I am also an ICT professional

AFAIK the maximum lenght you can cover without (serious) signal loss with USB2.0 cable is 5 meter.

To connect a beamer to a portable (for remote mouse steering) we sometimes extend to seven meters, but the result *is* visible (sloppy mouse movement, less responsive to clicks), so IMHO you would *not* want to have that when connecting a camera :P :P

...and then the 10D isn't even USB2.0 IIRC, ...so *I* would stay on the save side and not go farther than 3, maybe 4 meter...

PS: as with *everything*, quality (of the cable and connectors) *does* matter, and better 1 long cord than 1 + extension...

...hope this helps some, *my* €0.02 worth...

My kindest regards!

Max@Home

ICT = Information and Communication Technologies? If so, I suppose that's what I do too. But my skills are more in the high level programming, which basically means I really don't know how to program anymore - the Visual IDE's do it for you.

ICT is as wide as photography (almost )

I am more the 'desktop/laptop gearman' and 'purchaser', and do a lot with 'content/data' (digitalizing) rather than program.

I make nice actions in Acrobat Pro though , but as-you-said, 'wizard-driven'

My kindest regards,

I have found a Belkin Gold Plated type a usb male to 5pin mini b male 10ft in length at micro center for less than thirty bucks. I believe that will be the cable I will go with. Thanks for your input and anything else you might add. David C

Please make sure you use a passive USB cord, not an active one - they are a pain when you attempt to use them with cameras.
I would echo the comment, get a good quality single piece cord, not a USB extension lead.

I currently use a 15' USB data extension cable connecting to the Canon supplied USB cable with my XT when I run tethered in my studio . It's basically a single port USB hub (non-powered). Though for peace of mind I run it off a 5 port powered hub connected to my PC so i don't have to rely on PC supplied USB power.

I've never had any issues with data transfer using this setup.

Regards

Wardie
