Default 5D Classic or 60D

Hi,
I currently have a 40D with the following: 17-55 2.8 EFS, 70-200 2.8 IS, 28-105 mk 2. I'm looking to purchase a second body for the convience of not having to switch lens when shooting. I shoot mainly social events and the occassional confirmation etc. The only area I feel the 40D is weak on is when shooting at high ISO so my second body would need to cover this and have decent image quality. My budget will only allow for a used purchase so which of the following would be best (that old question again)?

5D classic

60D

They are both around the same price used. The other option is hold out and save some more for a used 5D Mk 2 or brand new 7D. I intend getting back into wedding photography in the future as I haven't tackled it since my days using film with an EOS 5.

(sorry my PC is so slow it appears that I have posted this multiple times thinking it had frozen)

I have both the 5D Mk1 and 40D, I find the noise at 800ISO on both of these cameras are about equal, the 60D sensor is supposed to have improved noise reduction so that would be something to consider.

I had a 5D1 and loved it - if you shoot with wide angle or take portraits it's still a fantastic camera. If you shoot sports you're not going to like it...

I've never had a 60D but have had many of the xxD. All nice cameras but I've stayed away from the 60D because they went to a plastic body.

So... I'd vote for you to save up for either a 7D or a 5D2... And depending on which you shoot more (portraits/wide or sports) would swing the choice.

Note that if you have any EF-S lenses that they can't be used on the 5D's - that may also contribute to your decision.

Good Luck!
Rob.

I shoot mainly potraits and my intention would be to hold onto the 17-55 even if I could only use it on the 40D as its a sharp lens. If I went the 5D or 5D Mk 2 route I would supplement it with a couple of 1.4 or 1.8 primes. All of this probably makes the 7D more attractive. My only niggle here is the fact that some people complain of noisy images on the 7D.

Thats what I'm afaid of, the fact that there might not be an improvement in IQ at high ISO. If that were the case I might be better picking up a second 40D body and using it along side my other one until funds allow a shift to a 5D MK2.

Since you only have funds for a used body, and your best event-lens are the 17-55 and 70-200, *I* wouldn't want to change formats, and would stay with the 60D and the 1.6x cropped bodies: 60D+17-55IS and 40D+70-200IS is a very strong combination for events. For convenience (and lower price ?) reason (same card & battery) you could also check out a used 50D, but that would not let you gain much in the high-ISO department.

...€0.02...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

I can pick up a used 60D for around 800 euro, used 5D classic is 650 euro, 5D Mk 2 used is 1,500 euro and used 7D is around 1,100 euro. I'm leaning towards the 60D for the resons you mentioned, the only downside is that I will have to carry around two battery types and invest in some SD cards. However its less expensive than investing in new glass.

The 60D's "plastic" body (it's actually a plastic and aluminum composite) has been shown to be stronger than the magnesium body of the 50D. Just for your information.

Modern engineering plastics and polymers are better than metals in a great many applications. There is nothing about a camera body which would preclude using high quality plastics. The advantage is clearly seen in better impact resistance and weight reduction.

I was looking at the same choice a few months ago. I ended up coming across a used 60D (only one shutter actuation) for $775. I jumped on it. Happy ever since.

I took the plung and picked up a used 60d at a good price. I also picked up a battery grip as I felt the 60d was not as well balanced with the 17-55 as the 40d. Thanks for all the replies.
