Default Photokina

Is this normal for Canon, no new camera announcements at Photokina ?

The 30D just came out in February. The 5D was the year before at Photokina? or the February show (can't remember which).

I'd expect something in February, if it's going to happen. Keep in mind, too, outside of the 1DsMkII, just about everything they have out in the DSLR market is now less than 2 years old. For these kinds of costs, that's a short product cycle to try and get people to upgrade for another $3K+.

I can fully understand why also.* After viewing the images from the new crop of 10 MP cameras including the 400xti vs. the 8.2 MP 30D, it gives the best rendition at lower noise than any of them.* I feel that Canon won't release an updated 30D or other until they are happy with the noise level of their cmos chip.* In viewing the samples from all of the new crop of 10 MP's, the 30D also has the clearest, cleanest images of any.

So it is "normal" for canon to announce befor the shows instead of during the shows. I was hoping for a new semi-pro model, mabe an 3d between the 5d and the 1 series.
13/14 mp FF
weather sealing
dust removal system
DIGIC III
4&8 FPS
and low noise at high ISO

I'm not sure "normal" is the right word here. Public Relations releases like new products are a marketing strategy that changes due to market conditions, company philosophy and the competition's marketing strategy. What may seem abnormal this time may simply be a reaction to the release of the Dxxs stuff from Nikon....which is really nothing more than the "upgraded" 20D that the 30D was (are Nikon users as upset about that as Canon users seemed to be?).

2007 is Canon's 70th Anniversary - PMA in February will be a much bigger new product "roll-out" for Canon than
Photokina. BTW: Canon had one of the largest displays at Photokina this year.

Personally, when not that much new stuff comes out, I don't mind. Less things to tempt the wallet. Honestly, my own gear is mostly vintage 2003 Nikon, and I'm still fairly satisfied with it. By the way, I've been using both companies' products, so I'm not implicating anything. =)

We usually just don't buy them unless we don't own the old one or need a new camera. Most of the whiners are DPReview members anyways. I see no reason to whine about new products that don't innovate; instead, I vote with my wallet by not buying them. BTW, some commentary regarding "S" models that I have some experience with:

The D70S wasn't much of an upgrade to the D70, as all functionality with the exception of the cable release and 0.2" gain in screen size was added in a firmware update. Now, the D2HS is a whole new beast compared to the D2H, and the new black box processing is worth the price even for D2H owners. If I had the money, I'd have one of them right now, but then I'd be homeless for a quarter. Besides, I could probably use supertelephoto first.

It's harder for a D2X user to justify buying a D2XS (unless they want the sweet new viewfinder masking or, again, need a new camera) as most of the features have been promised as a firmware update coming soon, and near impossible for a D70 user to justify upgrading unless they want a different-colored shutter release and consumer cable.

Honestly, I'd rank the 30D as being something along the lines of the D2XS: there's enough there to buy it instead of the old model if you need a new camera, but if you're using 20D cameras and don't need one, then don't bother upgrading.

I agree! I have the digital rebel and wanted a new camera so I bought the 30D instead of the 20D. So for me the upgrade was more of an upgrade then it would have been from the 20D.
I want to give my daughter the rebel but still want 2 bodies. I nice new ff other than the 5D would have been great timing. Maybe she can use the rebel until February, I am one of those people that want the latest & greatest .however my wants are not enough to justify $ 8,000.00.
