I have read several reviews of this lens. One of the few complaints I have read about is the build quality of this lens. How dust resistant is this lens? I am not a professional photographer but some of the places I will be useing this lens are in dusty conditions. This seems to be the perfect lens for me, but I'm a little worried adout spending $1100 for a lens that may not resist dust very well. This will be my first major lens purchase. I'm not sure if I should buy this lens or look at an L lens. This lens seems to be a good focal legnth for my 1.6 crop factor camera, and I can really use the f/2.8.

Hi jra702,
...if you need F2.8 then the only (Canon) alternative is an EF16-35mmF2.8L lens, weathersealed, but that lacks 20mm and IS... ...if you can do without F2.8 then there is the EF17-40mmF4L, weathersealed if you use a filter, but that lacks 15mm and IS... for me, the combination 17-55 + F2.8 + IS is so good, that I sold my 17-40F4L, and hardly use my 24-70F2.8L anymore...The EF-S17-55F2.8 IS is not built like an L, but I have no complaints, but then I haven't used the lens long enough (or in dusty situations enough...) to comment on dust, other then that *I* don't see any ![]() ...hope this helps, *my* €0.02 worth... Kindest regards, Max@Home |

Max@Home, I wasn't aware that the 17-40mm f/4 L wasn't weather sealed without a filter. Thanks for the info. I have looked at the 17-40mm f/4 L and also the 24-70F2.8L. At first I wanted the 17-40, then went to the 24-70 for the 2.8 and image quality. Then there is the 17-55 it seems the perfect combination for my needs.
After making this post i thought about getting my lenses out of the bag and see how they are holding up. I started with the kit lens, it had a little dust but not too bad. Then the 50 f/1.8, terrible lot more dust and even had a HAIR in it. How can a hair possibly get in a lens! The cleanest lens i have is the 70-300 usm, probably because it hardly ever gets used. I'm tired of shopping. I have looked at lenses for over a month now and it's time to make a decision. I could go back and forth between lenses forever. I'm going to order the 17-55 this week, if it gets dusty, it gets dusty, I'll get it cleaned. Now if i could just through a 70-200 f/4 in with the order. ![]() I told my wife it's an expensive hobby but cheaper than a bass boat, but she's not buying it. |

Hi all !
I have just bought a 17-55mm IS lens and I don't think it has a bad or low construction quality. I know that I don't have it for a long time, and that if I compare it to a L series lens it'll feel cheaper, but let's be honest: It's a damn good lens ! The only thing about it so far is that I just can't make photos at 17mm, and use the internal flash of my 30D...a shadow comes along with the subject of my photo; that's because of the 17-55 lens size, (77mm diameter) of course. Anyway, I don't like photos with flash, and that is one of the reasons I bought a 2.8 lens + a Image Stabilizer: to avoid using the flash to the maximum. But as far as I can tell now, it delivers good sharp luminous photos ! So, BUY IT ! If I happen to have complaints I'll be back here to report... (Hope not though...)* ![]() Check out this "baby's" size: ![]() Best regards* ![]() |

Hi Réjan!
Congrats on the new lens, and good to hear another favourite EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS report ![]() Some sidenotes: you might have a speckle of dust on a sensor or on a lens (see in front of the lens opposite of the word 'Japan') ![]() Sidenote 2: AF and IS are both turned off on the lens ![]() Sidenote 3: the shadow the internal flash casts is caused more by the lens's lenght than by its diameter ![]() ...and for the record: neither the 220ex nor the 430ex nor the 580ex external flashes cast lens-shadows when used in combination with the 17-55IS ![]() And Finally: IMPORTANT INFO FOR EF-S17-55F2.8 IS USM users: the 'alternative 1.6x crop lenshood for the 17-40F4L', the EW83DII, (original designed for the EF24mmF1.4L lens) also works on the EF-S17-55 IS (without vignetting), but the (dedicated designed for the EF-S17-55IS) EW83J protects against flare a lot better! ...and as always, only *my* €0.02 worth... Kindest regards! Max@Home |

Hi, Max@home !
The thing is... this photo I posted is NOT of my own lens, and I have bought a 30D, NOT a 350D. Here is the original site: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...5_28/index.htm My best regards, Réjan. |

from the review.
"Some may wonder why such a pricey lens wasn't marketed as a true Canon L grade lens - obviously a marketing decision. " Because its a EF-S lens.* Doesn't meet the part of the criteria for L lens. (professional lens for 35mm and digital cameras) __________________
