Default Canon 1DS Mark IV--rumors and fact

The 1DS Mark IV, the successor to Canon's flagship 1DS Mark III, has been under development for an exceptionally long time, and the rumor mill is working overtime these days. I just researched these rumors. Here's a rundown of what people are saying:
  • The 1DS Mark IV could boast anywhere from 37 to over 40 megapixels.
  • The new camera may finally merge the 1D line--being both a studio camera and a high-speed action camera. How likely is this from a technical perspective, though?
  • There's talk of an August 2011 announcement, along with announcements of a few new lenses.
  • The 5D Mark III may not be announced until six months later.
  • The 1DS Mark IV, it is rumored, will be smaller than the previous model.
  • The 1DS Mark IV may be positioned as competition for the medium format.
  • I've seen no speculation on price.
  • B&H Photo currently lists the 1DS Mark III as "temporarily unavailable," a fact that leads some to believe that a new model is imminent.
While the 1DS cameras are out of the price range of many photographers, their appearance and specs are nevertheless interesting to many, as they incorporate digital imaging technology and specifications that other, lower-priced cameras eventually achieve. So even if you don't see yourself ever owning a 1DS Mark IV, its appearance should be exciting.

It's definitely due out sometime soon! I'm excited, although I can't afford one.

I strongly doubt it's going to have over 30Mpx. IIRC, Canon stated something about not increasing the density of their sensors as a priority.

I've heard rumours that they will be amalgamating both 1Ds and 1D series into the 1D V

I hope not. I like its size & weight.

They could do what Nikon has done with their high-end D2/D3 cameras. Use the whole sensor for lower speed studio shooting, and use only part of the sensor (and fewer megapixels) for high-speed sports shooting.

That's disappointing, but then, it's only a rumor.

I guess I can take a breath then...if this is true, and we don't know that it is, then what a disappointment

Aren't the 2 image sensors the same size and both use the entire image sensor when an FX lens is mounted, but the studio version has 24 MP and the sports version has 12 MP?

IIRC both will only use the central APS-C size part of the image sensor if a DX lens is mounted.

I've had two sources that have friends who know someone inside Canon tell me that it is out this year

Unlikely: a true merger should merge 1.6x and 1.0x, as Nikon's FF/FX models do, and not 1.3x and 1.0x: but that is unlikely to happen at Canon, as the 1.6x lenses could still not be used due to their flange-back as it would collide with the (1.0x size) mirror.

...€0.02...

Kindest regards!
