Default Canon dual flash setup

I am using the canon 580ex dual flash setup to light groups of varying sizes indoors. One gun mounted on camera ( fill) and one shooting camera left into a brolly ( key ).This obviously means moving the setup about for the different size groups. I practised using the setup and metering with my sekonic flash meter but because of the preflash which I think the meter is reading I am getting totally wrong readings. Is there a way around this maybe a way of shutting off the pre flash until I actually need it.

I think you're part of the way there. You need to get the Canon ST-E2 to make all of this super easy. With it, you'll need both flashes off-camera, but that's better anyway.

The ST-E2 makes your exposure problems a thing of the past, since the camera will communicate exposure info to the flashes through the ST-E2.

The ST-E2 does help, but then you would have to move two offcamera flashes between shots...

If 580ex oncamera is in Master, and 580ex offcamera is in slave, this setup should work.

There is a testmode on the master 580ex that makes the flashes go off after each other in stead of simultaneous together, to be able to meter the different light from both.

Or use the (*) button to have the preflash 'out of the way' first

...*my* €0.02...

Are you shooting in E-TTL mode? If so, then manual flash metering is a waste of time.
