Do you already have a bracket, or do you need to find one?

Need to find one.
Guessing if Canon 480EG is already in production or if it's outdated.
Maybe I'll better buy a Metz 45sumthing with adapter fit my needs (burst shoot, side mount, possibilities of turn up don right left)
So confused... confused.

Hi croma65,

Canon has a specific bracket for the 580ex, the Speedlite bracket SB-E1. Comes inclusive of the OfcameraShoeCord-2 (OCSC-2), so the flash is still fuilly linked to the camera.

If you want a non-Canon (universal) bracket, you would need at least that OCSC-2 to connect flash to camera.

How to? first connect the bracket, then connect the OCSC-2, then put the flash on the OCSC-2.

Example-pics show a 420ex, a universal bracket and the PowerShot G3 and Pro1 )

Hope this helps in answering your questions, kindest regards,

Max@Home

If you do not already have a diffuser, pick up a Lightshpere from Gary Fong. You don't really need a bracket anymore at all.

There are still plenty of uses for brackets. The lightsphere isn't meant to obsolete it. There are several situations where I wouldn't consider using diffused light, but still need to be able to move the flash above the lens in portrait orientation.

What's the deal with this flash when used on a 5D + 85L? I've heard that this flash has issues when used with this camera + the 85L - if the 5D has a '1' for the 5th digit in it's serial (as I have), but I've also read that it does in fact work... Is it just lacking certain functionality? I don't really want to send it off if at all possible. Are there any other flashes that could be used with this combo and which would work as well as the 580EX?

Perhaps you're referring to a firmware issue involving the 5D, ST-E2, 580EX using ETTL. Here are some details: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0607/06...infirmware.asp.

Yes I am. The problem is this (taken from Canon website):

2. Fixes the phenomenon where the shutter cannot be released when using the EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX.

This malfunction could happen with some lenses or flashes other than this model. For EOS 5D units that contain 1 in the fifth digit of the body number (e.g., XXXX1XXXXX), the correction will not be reflected even if the firmware is updated to Version 1.0.5.
If you have an affected product that you would like to have fixed, please contact the nearest Canon Service Center. In addition, for products that have been repaired at our service center in the past, updating the firmware to Version 1.1.0 will retain these correction.

So I would have to send my camera in for a service fix as I have a '1' in the fifth digit of the serial number. I just recall reading somewhere that even a 5D with this serial number was operating correctly with the 85L and this flash. I wasn't sure if that meant full functionality or not.

I don't want to send it off if I can help it, and I would be interested in using this camera/lens combo with flash, so my question was around the possibility of 3rd party flashes that would work with this and be equivalent to the 580EX.

Nope, PaulS is referring to an earlier update:

EOS 5D Firmware Update 1.05: (from BeBit pages)

The issue is, that the 85F1.2L 'I' does not give distance information back to the camera. The E-TTL2 and 580ex want distance information to the subject to (better) calculate the poweroutput needed.

No info, no calculation, flash not ready, no exposure (camera will not 'go off' at all)

Since PaulS has an early 5D with the affected serial number (5th digit of serial number from the left is a '1') the upgrade Canon has made available does not 'catch' in his specific camerabody.

If PaulS insists upon not-sending-body-in-for-repair alternatives to the 580ex would be the 550ex or the 430ex...

550ex is a bit slower to recharge, is a tad less powerfull in output, and a lot less userfriendly, but has more-or-less the same controls and functions as the 580ex.

The 430ex is faster to recharge as the 550ex, but has a lot less powerfull output, and lacks the 'mastermode' of the 550ex/580ex.

But 430ex is a lot easier/friendlier in use compared to 550ex.

The only 3rd party alternative which 'couples' like a SpeedLite is the Sigma DG 500 -and some letter- flashunit

My choice would be to send the 5D in and take full advantage of the 5D+580ex features and power, there is a lot to like in this flash, IMHO...

...as always, *my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

Max - you're right as usual . I just don't want to part with something as I'm always wary of what state it comes back in. I bought this camera via the official Canon 'resale' arm - i.e. refurbished but with full Canon guarantee (and a huge saving off retail). I've yet to test this claim of 100% warranty, but I presume that this will be dealt with under warranty with no cost to me?

Hi PaulS,

According to Canon website this repair is done without cost to you, after contacting they should send you a RMO-form and sticker/tag to put on your parcel, in The Netherlands Canon even covers for the shipment fee in this specific case.

PS and BTW: there are other Canon lenses that do not give distance information (like EF50F1.4), but it seems they were covered in the design, for some reason (the imminent arrival of the EF85F1.2L II ??) the EF85F1.2L I was forgotten to be added to that list...

...*my* €0.02 worth...

Again, my kindest regards,

Max@Home
