Default Calling on current/former 10D owners gone 20D ...

Greetings everyone, this is my very first post.

Well, it's official -- my wife is letting me to keep the 20D with the condition that all funds received for our 10D go toward paying off the 20D and that I work O/T for a week to pay off the difference. Having said this, already have my 10D sold to a fellow member of dpReview forum.

So ... as a current or former 10D owner, can anyone tell me what it is you personally find better about the 20D over the 10D in your own personal experience and area of photography? If you no longer have your 10D are there any regrets getting rid of it .. and if so, why?

Today I will go out and shoot to the day's end with this 20D -- I may even go shoot my son's high school football team while they're practicing for Thursday's football game. After all, I purchased the 20D for its shutter speed and high ISO performance particularly because of my son's evening games.

However, everyone has differnet styles and expectations which is why I'm posting this question here. I'm only asking because I know what the 10D can do in terms of image quailty. Like this one taken with my 10D of my son cutting our grass. Notice it almost looks 3D it's just so darn clear and chrisp, although I'm sure the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L had something to do with it as well.

Thank you all so much in advance for your valued feedback.*

Regards,
Dave

Default Not much activity here.. how do you feel about this?

This morning I went out to shoot a few test pics (nothing special) I just wanted to shoot at ISO100 and f/4 in Av mode to test for this so-called grain the 20D is supposed to display at low ISO settings.

Now I'm a tad concerned about these images .. but you guys tell me if my perception is correct or just my imagination, but do the 10D images look better -- could it be the time of day (haze etc).. early morning 8:00 am vs 11:00 am?

20D test images @ ISO100, f/4, various focal lenghs, and shutter speeds:

10D test images @ ISO100, f/4, various focal lenghs, and shutter speeds:

What does your trained eye see that I'm missing here? Do the 10D images look better to you also? :-[

Any help will be most appreciated. I have the 10D sold but want to make sure this 20D is working as it should before I ship my 10D. I'm sure you understand... :-\

Regards,
Dave

Are you shooting in raw or Jpeg? Do you have the 20D settings set exactly like you had in the 10D? Each camera is a bit different and you must adjust for the differences. I believe the pics come out a little bit softer than the 10D but that is due to the filter that helps control the noise much better than the 10D did.

Default Morgan...

Hi Morgan...

Would you upgrade to the 20D from the 10D, and if so.. may I ask why? I see you have pro equipment, and I saw your work (very nice indeed), so I value your opinion.

Regards,
Dave

I owned the 20D and just recently sold it.

Yes,

I would upgrade. The 20D starts up much faster, the resolution is higher and the noise is a lot lower at high ISO's than the 10D. Once you get use to the 20D and how it works, you will find yourself doing some really great pictures. It is a really well built camera and produces excellent pictures. The photos on my web site were mostly done with the 20D as I just recently purchased the 1D series camera.

I have the 20D after having the 300D (Rebel) and I have had problems with the 20D since day one in a noise related way. I am posting a pic that I took after getting it back from Canon for the second time since I purchased the 20D at the end of June. I think I have a default sensor as its completely speckled and Canon doesn't seem to see it on my images as I do. Please let me know what you think of the quality. This was taken without any exposure compensation, in raw mode, iso 100, around 1pm, 1/1000 sec at f7.1. My 300D produces a lot better quality of images than my 20D as of right now. I did handhold this shot so there is a little bit of camera shake as I can't hold it very well. oh and this was taken with the Canon 70-200 L lens IS.

The first time I sent the 20D to Canon, they just cleaned the sensor and gave it right back to me. The second time I sent it in with a CD of images, this is what they did: Clean and Adjust CMOS Ass'y. Clean lube and align CMOS sensor/Focus/Shutter/Mirror. All feature and functions were checked using PC&MAC with USB & Video.

I don't quite understand what all they did, but I do know right now I am just frustrated and am not sure what to do. Any help and advice would be great. I really want to be excited about this camera, but....

Michele

PS
I did post this in another area, but thought it might be good to post it here as well or I felt this might be more appropriate. I apologize for the double posting.

I think it's hard to set up meaningful comparison tests since there are so many variables. Presumably you used the same lens? I'd say hang on to the 10D until you convince yourself that the 20D doesn't suck (and if you can't do that then return the 20D). I say ignore the specs and let your eyes be your guide. And now of course there's the new 5D ...

Default 20D .. it's a KEEPER! :-)

I went to my son's football practice and can say the 20D is a "keeper" as far as I'm concerned.* WOW!

Thanks all for your feedback.

Regards,
Dave
