Default card reader

1st post - just got a Nikon D90 and been practicing. Took the sd card out to put into an Edge USB 2 card reader. The mac pro running 10.5.8 doesn't pick it up nor does the Nikon Transfer program. The red light on the card reader does come up - so trying to read something. Tried the card reader using a compact flash card and no problems - computer picks it up right away.
Ran the cord between camera and computer and the card shows up.
Any suggestions or another place to find answer for this? I did try the Edge website but no luck there.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
~bruce.

I'd guess that you have an SDHC card (larger than 4GB), and your card reader is not compatible with this format for large (high capacity) SD cards.

I think zemlin is correct in that you have an SDHC card and your reader is incompatable. However, SDHC cards start at 2GB not 4GB.

Thanks for the quick reply - yes it is an SDHC card. Any suggestions on a good reader for those that will work on Mac OS X.5?

Standard SD cards range from 1 GB to 4 GB. High-capacity SDHC cards begin at 4 GB

A 4 GB card could be either SD or SDHC. Smaller than 4 GB and it's SD, larger than 4 GB and it's SDHC.

I stand corrected as to SDHC starting @2GB. I was given some misinformation by a salesperson when I twice returned an SD card reader that would not read my 2GB cards. zemlin and 00dan are correct. I won't go into the details so as not to confuse the issue any more than I might have already. Sorry bout that...Ray

I bought an SDHC card reader from Calumet Photo and it solved my problem and works perfectly!

If the card reader is giving you problems get this one. I have this one and it works with any SD card you put in it.

Yes, SDHC cards come in 4, 8 and 16 GB, at least that is what my camera manual says.Just noticed that 32GB cards are available as well.
