Has anyone had any experience with the Stroboframe Vertaflip camera rotator tripod head? It looks like it would be great for portrait work.

I have one and have used it with my XTi, I was going to try to use it the 5DII but I think I have to adjust it so the bigger camera will allow the full rotation. I was in a rush at the time and haven't gone back to try it again.

The mechanism looks very much like the assembly on the LR camera bracket and that I have experience with. There are 5 hinge points held together with nuts and nylon bushings. The bushings are supposed to prevent the nuts from backing off when changing orientations. I've found this doesn't work so well. The nuts loosen up and this creates slop in the assembly. Frequent use requires frequent tightning.
There are better options. Steve |

YUP! That assembly is exactly the same as the one on the Stroboframe hand held bracket. I use mine on the tripod- whiteout a flash head, and it works fine. That Assembly is very well build. The tension can be adjusted by slightl tightening of the nuts and bolts- the operative word is "slightly" - if theses nuts and bolts are over tightened, the entire mechanism will lock up. When everything is working well the change of orientation is very quick.
The other brand unit looks like it works on a more simplistic design. It seem a bit expensive but I don't know if it as well built as the Stroboframe or not. Ed |

Yep the other one is a simpler design. The mechanism is a track that runs on roller bearings. There are detents at each extreme for locking into place. Its a very strong design. I had troubles with the nuts on the stroboframe backing-off making the assembly wablly and awkward. I liked the stroboframe design and would have put up with the constant tightning until the camera store guy showed me this other bracket. In his words, "It'll be the last bracket you have to buy". It is considerably more expensive and for me, worth it. |
