Default Vignetting with a filter and an ultrawide lens

Hey everyone!
So my next lens purchase is going to be a true ultra wide lens! I am flip flopping between the nikon 10-24, the tokina 11-16, or depending on the price, the nikon 12-24.

Either way, I want a ND filter for it. A relatively strong one, I am looking at the B+W 110 (1000x).

I have heard that you will get some vignetting with a filter like this on a wide angle lens. Unless you use a slim filter, right?? So how bad is the vignetting?? Because I don't think this particular filter comes 'slim'.

If you folks have any experience, or even an example shot or something to give me a better idea what I will be dealing with, that would be great!!

Thanks!

Take a look at 4x6 square filters. They can be hand held in front of the lens or mounted using a holder.

Thanks for the responses!
so zemlin, the vingnetting does not look too bad, to me at least, just a little portion of the corners. I may be able to live with that

Thanks ohenry, I currently have a cokin filter holder, I was under the impression that that a screw on filter is optically better quality. Do they make those filters you are talking about in glass?? I think the ones I have for the cokin are plastic.

Get higher quality 4x6 glass filters from Lee or Singh-Ray instead of the Cokin plastic stuff and one filter can be used with several lenses.

Singh Ray and Lee are high quality resin lenses that come in 4x6 size that will fit into your Cokin holder (if you have the Pro-Z model) or handheld over the lens (which is the way I typically do it). HiTech also makes a good quality lens, but I would opt for Singh Ray if it fits within your budget.

I remember looking at some singh ray filters awhile ago, the screw on types, they are expensive, but I am realizing that you get what you pay for with this type of thing! You could have the best lens in the world, and throw a cheap filter on the end and whats the point, right?!

I will definetly consider the 4x6 filters, I cant remember what cokin holder I have off the top of my head.

Hi there,
I have the Sigma 10-20 lens for my Nik D200. I use the normal cokin filter holder, but I have cut the last two grooves off, leaving me with just a slot for the pol filter and a slot for a square filter. No problems with vignetting at all.

Cheers moxi1
