The Hama Slide Duplicator mounts to any lens with a 52mm filter mount. I have seen these locally for about EUR 99 (about US$ 145). There might be similar products available.

Most slide copying equipment assumes a 135 format slide being copies with 135 format camera. Trying to duplicate 135 format slide with an APS-H or APS-C format body is not going to work well.

I copied slides by inserting them in the end(side) of a cerial or cracker box and sealing it up with black gaf tape. Shove the box over the lens. Light it from the outside (point it at the light) focus and snap normally. Remove and exchange slides and continue. Lighting can be very well controlled (or limited) from the outside.

Care must be taken in focusing each slide though because the box may move or shrink/expand with temperature or time.

Leave a little for cropping. Obviously it would not be perfect but has worked satisfactorily so far.

My purpose in doing this was to copy a friends slides to digital for him. At the time I was using a d70 and a sigma 28-90 lens.

Obviously I was getting about a 6mb file of the quality a d70 w/macro lens was capable.

On screen they looked very good and were seemed very typical of good quality. I honestly dont know about the print quality (I didnt do any). I can only say that on screen they appeared as good or better than photos I was actually shooting myself.

Hi there,

I have got a scanner, but scanning a lot of slides took soooo long I gave up on it and use a home made copying gadget.

( I would show it but don't know how to add pictures into the threads)

On the end of my lens shade I mounted a Cokin filter holder into it I put the slide. In the beginning I used the set-up holding it into the light, but different conditions like sun and overcast were not consistent enough so I added to the end a flash via tripod and external connection.

The copying goes very fast and I have the benefit of a relative large picture-file enabling me to crop the image if there should be the need.

Cheers moxi1

Hi Moxi
Very good idea, but donot u get your pictures overexposed by light enitting from flash, or you have placed your flash at large distance like 10 ft away ? Please psot some pictures of your setting for slide copying, you can add your pictures using ADDITIONAL OPTIONS which is just below Reply To A Thread.

Thanks

You can get any size enlargements, but to get true photo quality enlargements (300dpi) of 12x15" you need 16 megapixel files. Your Canon 1000D's 10,1 megapixels will get you max. 8,5x13" prints at true photo quality (300dpi).

Hi alok,

in a minute I will try if I manage to include my picture.
Should it no work this time I keep trying.
I did press "upload" the picture but I don't see it Well, now I see it!

I actually have an old flash which does not work on Auto with my Digital camera, so I have to use Manual and try which setting is best - with a new flash this should be easy.

I have the flash relatively close, on the picture you will see that I have towards the flash a piece of plastic as diffuser so the flash does not create hot spots.
If that does not seem to be enough you would have to put some tissue paper around the flash head to diffuse the flash.

It is a process of trying out the best setting.

Cheers Moxi1
