hey all, can anyone point me to a good resource for camera mounted flashes for my nikon DSLR?
i am going to be doing some beach photography and need something that is powerful enough to handle the job while still remaining "experimentally inexpensive" used is good. thanks! august __________________

If your not versed in using flash you'll definately want to stick with a speedlight that will TTL with your camera.
Since you don't tell us which Nikon DSLR you have it makes it difficult to make specific recommendations.` Since you are experimenting have you considered just renting a Nikon Speedlight rather than buying? |

Also find a store that has a return policy and then if you do not like return for full refund.
Can't beat free rental. We have a camera store here that has a 14 day full refund return, so I rent from there for free. you just have to be careful with the packaging and manuals etc. I usually leave them all in the box. |

You don't mention your camera model, your budget nor anything about your beach photography.
Also how experimental are you? haha I only ask because I would suggest getting a flash that has a sync port and full manual control so that in the future you can try using it off camera. The sync port isnt so important because accessories and mods can fix it; however full manual control sets apart tools from toys! I bought myself a nikon sb-24 for use with a canon dslr for use in automatic and manual mode. works for me and my purposes. it cost me about 60$ on ebay. I believe the above mentioned sb-600 has full manual mode and is a good fit with a current generation nikon dslr. do an advanced search on ebay to see how much theyre selling for (check the completed auctions). MPEX developed and sells a good manual flash called the lumopro for 130$ |

The SB600 is a great Strobe. I use the SB900, and I still have been known to use my very old Vivitar 283 combined with it.
Besides having and using the Strobe in the situation at the Beach you didn't really give us any information about what your shooting or how large the group will be. I would also use a reflector to bounce light back onto your subject especially under these extreme lighting conditions. You could always look up some of the stuff on "Strobists" go here: Strobist: Welcome to Strobist. |
