Default Poll: Ballhead's for my Need's

I currently have a Manfrotto 322RC2 as a multi-puporse head which is great for a lot of things but not macro/close-up work as the head dips a tiny amount when I let go of the 'clamp'.

My set-up will be primarily my S3 Pro with either, on the light end, a 90mm 2.8, or on the heavier end of things, a 300mm f/4. All with various combinations of TC's & extension tubes. I want something that works smoothly and with no 'dip'.

Give it a vote and let me know your opinion of any of those heads if you use them. It would be appreciated!*

I voted 'other' because I use an Arca-Swiss B1. It doesn't dip at all. Mine's about 15 years old and been through lots of dirt, grime, sand and salt... it's as smooth as it was when I bought it.

I've not used the Kirk head but I'm totally sold on their plates, first quality.

Wish I could justify the cost of one of those beauties...I find it hard enough parting with potentially 400+ dollars for the Kirk or the Manfrotto 468...

Yep, I think the post-traumatic purchase amnesia made me forget that I piped about $800 into a tripod, head and a couple of plates. It's been a good investment though, I never have to worry or even think about my camera support as long as I don't forget it. I just saw that B&H has the one I use (90#, knob QR) for $400.

Good luck.

I use a Manfrotto 322RC2 also and mine has no dip after release of the pistol grip.* It sounds like maybe yours has some wear or has it always done it?* I'd write Manfrotto to see what they can do.

Edit: I looked at mine today, twisted some screws and found that if the recessed screw on the back side of the pistol grip on the rotating collar is loose it causes severe dip. Tighten it up and it goes away. PM me if youneed a pic posted of what I'm talking about.

I bought the Markins M10 L ball head and it's the best head I've ever owned.

It's awesome. really. Two of my friends have purchased them after seeing and using mine.

It's less expensive than the RRS and Kirk heads and it's solid as a rock.

I'd stay away from the Acratech Ultimate Ball Head.

i have been looking at ball heads for some time. a few people that i respect reccomended the 488RC4. I do like the dual spirt levels. I was looking at the vertical bracket for the rc2 and think it can be adaped for the rc4 as well.
