Difference between cards

Whats the diffrence between memory cards. I currently have a Sandisk Extreme III 1GB SD. Thats costs $39.99 when i can get another one like the Lexar 1GB SD Card for $19. Do they effect the photo. Im not saying im going to buy these im wondering what the difference is?

I used strictly Lexar until I got my 5D, which reportedly didn't play well with Lexar 2gb cards, switched to San Disk. Personally never had any card problems whatsoever.

Hi Joel,

The most noticeable difference between memory cards is the speed that your camera can write images to them and/or your PC can download images from them

Another difference is the quality of the card itself and the warranty the manufacturer provides: the 'Big Name Brand Cards' (Kingston, SANDisk, Lexar) all come with lifetime warranty ...

Well, I have several and my largest is an SD San Disk 4 GB SDHC and its pretty good.
I have 2 Ultra II 2 Gbs and they feel exactly the same speed, truthfully I cant tell any changes except for the size.
But, I have one SD Extreme III 2 GB and its a lot faster in every way. Taking shots on my Nikon D80 as well as uploading from my card to the puter. I had used this faster card in a group Candid Shooting situation and I didn't have to wait for anything except sometimes my batteries in the external Flash. LOL
I had shot Raw exclusively and felt the the Extreme III was faster and I had used several different cards. All of my cards are made by Secure Digital so I can Not compare between manufacturers but Kingston and Lexar are supposed to be just as good.

For most cameras you won't see much of a speed difference when writing to the card. You will see a difference in how fast the buffer is cleared if you fill it up, but writing should be about the same.

The difference will be pretty obvious, however, when you plug the card into a fast card reader that can take advantage of the added speed and copy the images to your computer. Slow cards will appear to chug along compared to faster cards that zip right through the copying process.

Also, the most recent DSLRs will show differences in writing to the cards.

SecureDigital (SD) is the format/type of card, like CompactFlash (CF) is another format/type, SANDisk is the manufacturer of the 'Extreme III', the 'Extreme IV' and the 'Ultra II' series

Haha, my Bad...... Of course your correct. There is also a link to a page that SD has so you can see which Card is compatible for which camera. I dont think its updated, nor for that matter correct but it will give you an idea. Go here: SanDisk | Compatibility

I just bought a PNY 2 Gig same speed as the San Disk Extreme III at 20mb/sec but I saved about 5 bucks. The other PNY Premier I think its called is just a few dollars cheaper but it looks like its the same speed as the Ultra II in San Disk. Any comments? I was looking for the Transcend Mem Cards but again not in my area without using the Net. I like to buy local as long as I'm not paying thru the nose.

I cant seem to find anything more than the 2 Gig in the Extreme III version in my area again without having to go to the net. So at this point I think I have enough cards to last me thru a major shoot/vacation.

I now have:
2-2 Gig Dane Electric (normal or standard speed)
1-2 Gig San Disk (normal or standard speed blue color)
1-2 Gig Micro Center (normal speed, Local Store Free sales promo)
1-2 Gig San Disk Extreme III
1-2Gig PNY 133X
1-4 Gig SDHC San Disk
====
16 Gig's all total to shoot in Raw.

How many cards/Gigs do you bring with you when you shoot if your going to be shooting heavy?
