Default UV/Skylight filter. Friend or Foe?

Having just bought a new Sigma 10-20mm lens, i looked on E-bay for a UV or skylight filter for the lens. I noticed that prices varied greatly from £18 ($35) to £80 ($150).
I asked a friend what he thought the difference was and he told me that he wouldn't ever buy either a UV or Skylight.
His opinion was that Nikon or Sigma have made a high quality optic from high quality glass and by putting on any filter reduces the quality of the image produced.

Sounds logical but what's your view?
Should i remove the UV filter from all of my lenses?
Beau

PM the mods or just report it. They'll see it either way. The mods are listed at the bottom of the forum, right side.
