I'm trying to figure out what sort of tripod I should purchase and really like the Gitzo explorer series for the versatility it offers. However, I am concerned that all those joints rely solely on friction to keep everything positioned as set. Will it slip?? Please comment on your experience in this regard.

I have yet to have a bad experience with Gitzo products. No slipping as long as the joints are tightened correctly, even over time. My 1588 Monopod managed to get dropped in the sand by a friend (term used loosely now, haha... just kidding), and the joints still hold without issue.
The new joints are much better, and pretty much impossible to overtighten, unlike the older ones. They stay a lot better too, and take the guesswork out of how much tightening/loosening is needed. |

Thanks Cyclo-- I was primarily concerned about the joint between the legs and the head (or spider - or whatever it is called) as all other Gitzo products have detent stops at that joint whereas on the explorer it is a friction type joint...
