I've been looking more into this and have heard of people foregoing filter holders altogether and just holding the filter up to the lens. Why is this not a good idea?

You can't hold perfectly still.

I have 4 ND filters.

Hoya ND 2 stop and 3 stop 77mm filters (non graduated) (rarely travel with me much due to cost and I tend to break filters...I'm a clutz)

And, since I break them often when hiking or trekking in different places, I want less expensive filters.. Cokin 4 stop soft edge graduated ND filter and Cokin 2 stop graduated ND soft edge filter with the Cokin holder and 77mm, 62mm and 67mm rings for the Cokin holder.

I use them all periodically and in different situations.

Julio

Julio, I hand hold my filters all the time. As long as my camera is on a tripod so I don't have to worry about it, I can hold a filter and still take the shot. And it's easier to make minute adjustments while looking through the viewfinder. And, if I wanted to get creative, I and move the GND around a bit. Although the GND filter is the only one I've handheld recently, I've held a number of different filters up against the lens hood in the past. The only thing I have to watch for is finger prints on the glass filters.

Hey, what's that pattern in the sky?

LOL

Hey has anyone tried that set of LEE filters? There's a pack of Cokin style filters and they seem relatively inexpensive, but you get a pack of 'em with different gradations.

No, I haven't, Julio. But don't forget you usually get what you pay for.

Default My reccomendation...

http://www.singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html

Get the cokin-p size. Fully adaptable to any lens with just a new screw mount thingy. Great filter.

Definitely, I keep hearing that the Singh Ray filters are pretty much top of the bunch. Of course these bad boys are $99 a pop.

Default More stuff

You can get the filter holder and adapter rings here:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...rch&Q=&ci=3848

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...rch&Q=&ci=3847

The start-up cost may be a little more, but the ability to change the elevation of the ND split and adapt the filter to any thread size is just great.

Very helpful thread. Thanks, everyone.

Just to be clear, for you ND (neutral density) filter users out there, what if any qualitiative differences exist between HiTech and Singh-Ray filters? The Singh-Ray filters command quite a price premium. What are you getting for that extra money? Anyone?

I've had good luck with them. I also order my Canon ink cartridges from them.
