Default Manfrotto 222 head not for me

Unfortunately, I've not taken too much of a liking for this joystick style head. It doesn't stay in position with an E-1 + 50-200mm lens (around 1.5KG?). It's also really tricky to do small and precise adjustments when taking macro/close-up shots.

I think what I really would like is a head that allows close and accurate movement towards and away from the subject. Are there any heads around that can do this? I'm thinking something like the bellows/rails paraphernalia but which would work with any lens combination.

Try the Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick head. It can hold a 5Kg load and the 322 weighs less than one kilo. It has a tension adjustment to account for the load and make the motion smoother. Can be used for vertical shots too... I use it for a Canon 5D with up to a 70-200mm zoom with no problems.

The 322 can not do small adjustments like those required for macro work. I haven't found a rail head for that, but I am interested...

The 322RC2 is definitely a BIG improvement over the 222 which I had for a couple of days before I returned it and upgraded. Totally different in feel and function.
