Default Hotshoe Part II

Err, please excuse my extremely noob questions, but I couldn't find any manual on how to do it anywhere.. I recently got a budget radio trigger, and I've managed to hook everything up--transmitter on hot shoe, receiver on strobe. The test button on the gadget works fine when pressed, meaning the strobe does fire and the receiver's red light blinks to indicate it "read" the firing signal. But when I actually press the camera button itself to take the photo, nothing happens. Any suggestions? Doesn't the camera's hot shoe work automatically when something is in it, whether it's a flash or radio transmitter? Also, do hot shoe transmitters need to be pc synch-corded to the camera? Can't it just work with the hot shoe cordlessly?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate any help this way...

The first thing that comes to mind is maybe the transmitter isn't fully inserted into the hot shoe and not making a good connection.

What camera and what flash are you using? Most of these inexpensive RF devices work with the manual flash mode only, no TTL metering.

@highbarger: I rechecked my connections, and they seem to fit snugly into the hotshoe, with no tangible allowance I could feel when the flash is shaken lightly. No go.

@jfrancho: I'm trying to use my Sigma EF-500 DG ST flash offcam, and will try setting it to manual. will be going to the Sigma website as well and see if I could download a manual on this.

Guys, thanks for the replies, really appreciate it.
