problem with new strap

First post here.

I received a strap from a friend (it was free, I was not complaining). It is a wide strap with the metal clips on the ends. When I attach it to my Canon Rebel XT, it seems to be more in the way than anything because the metal clips are so big and the loops it connects to are so narrow.

What do most people do to modify these straps so they are more functional?

smart ass answer - Lose the strap and get a hand grip (for me)

Forum Answer - Sounds like the strap was meant for larger equipment or carrying a case. Many camera straps (even the wide neck ones) have the cloth/fabric lines on the bottom that loop and cinch. Since it was free, could you modify the clips to be removed?

I can remove the clips completely, but then I need a way to attach the strap to the loop on the camera. I was thinking about something very strong, like small zip ties.

zip ties would cause similiar issues because of the flexibility. They have clips with rotating ends that can be pretty great for what you need. Can you post a picture of it?

I use an Op/tech pro loop strap.

Me, I am still in the stone age. I wouls be tempted to get another strap. How is that for a strapping idea?

are the attachments on your camera body round or flat ? if flat you can get some flat nylon strap and attach them on with eye's so your strap can clip on about 6 inches away from the body. I use a LowePro Speedster Lowepro - Speedster
which use these and has the clips above the body of the camera. I am not sure but i think the Optech that Jfrancho linked to uses the same attachment.

The Pro Loop system is just a nylon loop. You disconnect the quick release snaps, and use a simple slip knot to connect the ends. See this: Pro & Pro Loop Strap | Demo Page and look at #4 here: System Connectors | Demo Page
