Default Which PSD do you have

Just to see what everybody is using for portable storage. Also, would you buy that device again or will you buy something else.

Don't you need a PC/laptop to use these.

PSDs are something like the Epson P-3000

i have one of these. mine is the cd burner. i do not recommend it. if you like the idea of a burner, get a dvd one. its a lot cheaper in the long run. other wise get a mini hs storage device with a built in card reader.

Thanks Kev. I think a portable burners is somewhat outdated by now, with the new & fast devices.

Been looking at this one.
It's very basic unit, which some people find attractive. No screen, no viewing of the photos, just transfer of photos with a click of a button. Plus an option to verify the transfer. It's fast, but the other model from the same company is even faster.

In any case, would be nice to know what everybody is using & recommending.

What about when carrying a laptop is not feasible, like traveling abroad or taking lots of pics (of an event for example).

I bought a Wolverine 7040 40gig FlashPac approx. 2 years ago. Looked neat and I thought I had to have one. I have used it maybe 12 times since. At the time I only had a 1g and 2g flash card. With the prices on the 4g and 8g cards dropping I'll be using it less.
It works OK, could be a little faster and battery life better. If I had to buy it over again I probably wouldn't. But if needed it will fit in your back pocket and will do the job.

I have an old MindStor PSS-1705 that I put a 40 GB drive in. Replacing the original 5 GB drive. Works pretty well, but could be a bit faster. The unit has been reliable. Unfortunately Minds@Work is out of business now.

What about the Smartdisk 40GB (photobank) to use out in the field to download photos from CF cards? Any comments on this one? OfficeMax - Office Supplies, Furniture, Copy Paper, Computers and Electronics

I apologize for the long link. I don't know how to do the ones like above.

Same here.

I bought a smallish laptop for that purpose. It's a cheap little Averatec with a 12" monitor, 1GB, 60GB drive, DVD burner and 802.11G built-in. It's only 1" thick and is about the same footprint as piece of letter size size paper. The small size and weight are what makes it work for me.

Is it a PSD for hiking or other super lightweight high mobility shoots? No!

But I have CS2 and all of my plug-in's available at all times It goes everywhere with me and with a very few exceptions, I can use it as a PSD. For a few hundred dollars, I have the ideal set-up for MY needs.

I wish mine was smaller - its a big hunk of a Dell D810 with a 15" wide screen LCD. Weighs in at about 7 lbs.

That's why I bought this one - it's dedicated for photo travels and lives in my Tamrac Cyperpack 8 where I barely notice that it is there. My regular Dell laptop is big and heavy like yours.

It was $550 at Circuit City about a year ago. I believe that they can be had even cheaper now because "nobody" wants a 12" screen.

I do have a big, heavy laptop for normal use - but there is no way I would drag it around in my backpack evey where I go.

It's one of the reasons I travel with a Pelican PCS179 rolling bag. It fits in the external laptop case...barely...plus goes in the overhead bin in US planes (haven't checked European planes yet).

Of course, with the laptop, power supply, camera, lenses, etc., it's almost a two man operation getting the bag above my head.
