Default Trigger Device

Just passing this along. I don't work for Quantum I just get their newsletter and this gadget looks interesting. It'll trigger a camera by sound, breaking an IR beam, or by changing intensity of light. Could be a fun toy.

Yeah ... neat device! I can think of a few applications for it that would be fun to play with, but none justify the cost. I did download the manual and breezed thru some of it. For the light sensing unit it mentions using it for fireworks or lightning .... geeze the frustrations I've had trying to catch lightning bolts by having my shutter open at the right time. Wonder if this really could make the challenge easier?

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed checking it out.

Lightning makes me want to pull my hair out. Open the shutter for 30 seconds and hope something happens, it closes, the info takes forever to write to the card, before I can open the shutter again a beautiful bolt streaks across the sky. Fireworks? I dunno Those aren't quite so challenging. I think this thing could be great for stop action and some of the stuff that Desmond does while attempting to blow himself up.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that it's an expensive gadget. I'm a Quantum flash user and I love the equipment and also know their stuff isn't on the cheap. But like FedEx used to say, when it absolutely positively has to be there....

Glad you enjoyed having a look.

That wait for digital to write a long exposure was a surprise to me when I first encountered it. I was shooting a snow scene at midnight under moonlight using a tripod. Made the best of it tho by warming my hands in my pocket. But for lightning OMG the wait was forever while the sky blazed around me and I was MISSING IT! Oh well maybe I'll get to try again someday. Your post did pop my memory back to a better time when you just had to use the film advance to quickly be ready for another exposure. My best lightning shot came while I was eating dinner. I'd set the Bronica under the patio cover to protect it in case it rained again. Dense low clouds were scudding by being lite from below by commercial businesses a couple blocks away. I had Vericolor color negative film loaded. Think it was rated 160ASA (ISO) but I like to overexpose it a bit so I always considered it 100ASA. Set the f-stop to the smallest, f-22, and triggered the locking shutter release just as I got the call to dinner. I'd been sitting a few minutes before I remembered the camera and went out to close the shutter. When the film came back from the lab I was amazed. I hadn't even seen it. It wasn't strong but well defined as it splintered around the telephone pole and among and under the wires above the backyard bushes that bordered the 2 1/4" square frame. Not one you'd see in "National Geographic" or "Arizona Highways" magazines, but it was victory for me. And, I got it when I was eating dinner!

Hey Mark thanks for the walk down memory lane. We shot Vericolor III and indeed it was ASA 160 but we rated it at 100, good film. That leaving the shutter open sounds familiar too my results weren't so great, but I wasn't shooting a Bronica either.

Cool toy, quantum has a few things I would not mind adding to my kit.

Looks cool and would be fun to play with. I just don't know if I have enough use for it at $400.00 for the starter kit.

I played recently with the Magic Lantern software for my EOS 550d, it also has features to remote trigger by sound, movements, lightning, ...
I just knocked with my hands on the ground to take a self portrait....
