Default tripod/accessory kit - what do you think?

I was asked by a friend what I thought of this deal - I honestly think it would be flimsy and not safe for a dslr, kind of 'you get what you pay for', but to tell the truth, I know very little about tripods. Before I answer her, I wanted to get some input here. If anyone has any comments about this, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
Sis

$30 seems a little much for that. Sometimes Amazon prices their photo equipment by the pound.

Probably.

But for only $30 you could afford to buy it and set it on fire so there's some value there!

You get what you pay for. I would not depend on that tripod to safely hold up my good camera. Most likely cheap plastic up top and very fragile. Also probably unstable. I'd take a pass.

The only useful part of the kit I see is the remote camera trigger. The rest is certainly too flimsy to be of any use.

I have an IR remote trigger for my Canon 7D. It only works if you are right in front of the camera.

I use a pair of Yongnuo RF-602's (the RF-603's are newer) plus a remoter trigger cord 99% of the time. The only time I can't use that is if I want to get into a flash/strobe picture myself. The remote trigger fires the flash/strobes immediately but it takes a small time for the shutter to trigger. The result is a black image since the flash/strobes have already fired by the time the shutter opens.

A set of Yongnuo RF-603's plus the remote trigger cable for your specific camera would be my choice for a remote trigger.

It seems to have a fair share of positive reviews from the people that have purchased it. I think those opinions might be more important.

That's what I've always heard, too. Thanks, WC.

Thanks for the info, Don. I was specifically asking about the tripod, though - my friend wants one and asked me to look at this deal and tell her what I thought about it, asking specifically if the tripod would be sturdy enough. I think the other things in the kit were of secondary interest to her. Appreciate the time you took to provide the information, though - it's useful to anyone wanting a remote trigger.

I haven't read those, but I will go back to the link to get that information too. Thanks for bringing that up.

I read all the reviews and yes, quite a few people are happy. But a good many of those said basically "it's a good deal but..." and included comments about the tripod being plastic, flimsy, and one said if it bites the dust, you're not out a lot of money. There were also a few negative reviews. My friend is really happy with and proud of her camera, and I cannot in good conscience endorse something that I believe could topple easily and mess up her camera or lenses. I do know she read the reviews herself. I linked her to the website of a camera store about 40 miles away with a range of choices in price and quality of tripods and recommended that she go check those out before ordering anything.

Thanks for all your help, everybody!
