Why not the 17-55mm f/2.8? The 24-70mm may not be wide enough for weddings on a crop sensor.

Please keep in mind that the 17-55mm f/2.8 is a DX lens and the 24-70mm f/2.8 is an FX lens. If you should ever decide to buy a D700, D800, D3, or D4 as a second body, the 24-70 may be more useful.

Well, lets look at that. On a d800, the DX lens is actually viable. Unlike the D700 or D3 where a dx lens meant you were only using 5-7mp on your camera, a D800 you are using 16mp in DX mode.

Not to say I disagree, as I think the 24-70 would be the better choice, but the 17-55 has become a viable option on the high MP camera.

Well, I have the 17-55 too, but my 24-70 outruns it even on the D300. Given the choice between the two, I would opt for the 24-70 even on DX.

I have both lenses and use them for much of my photography. I do however use the 24x70 much more that the 70x200.

I've had both the canon ones on a crop and I'd go for the 70-200. I found the 24-70 a bit short and I was always at the 70mm end. You're not going to find what's right for you here as you'll need to try them both first.

Don't ever sell the 50mm, that is a gem and under priced in my opinion.

24-70 f/2.8 is an awesome lens but when accompanied by the 70-200 f/2.8 VRII this pair is the gold cup the world wedding photography. Be prepared to spend about $4300 on a set of new lenses
