Default GPS opinions

I use my GPS a good bit for getting to locations. The Garmin 255W I have has been pretty good, I happy with it for the most part. But there are some times I'm finding that some new roads are not showing up. The section of I-40 around Greensboro, NC and I-73 north of Rockingham, NC come up regularly. I'm pondering whether to get the map upgrade or sell this one and get a new GPS. The unlimited map upgrade from Garmin is $120. I'm guessing that I can sell this one on C-List for near enough to make upgrading to a new unit with new maps for less than that. Has anyone used the TomTom map share? Any thoughts?

Have Fun,
Wm.

I'm not certain if Garmin is still offering a free map update with each new GPS, but it may be worth looking into. If you buy a new GPS, you may as well get the latest and greatest mapping update. I'm very much so a PRO Garmin user and as a result would be hard pressed to consider anything else. They are so user friendly. My wife and daughter are technically challenged and they found our Garmin Nuvi to be very simple and intuitive. Not to mention acurate. God luck in your decision.

Thanks Dave,

I am going to confirm that I can get the latest maps with a new unit before I buy one. I can understand you being pro Garmin, I'm very happy with this one.

Have Fun,
Wm.

I've had experience with two GPS units: Motorola and Navigon. The Motorola was garbage. The touch screen was unresponsive (unless you pushed hard on the right spot), and the US map was outdated and I could not find a available update. I took the motorola back, got a Navigon and I love it! It came with 2 years of free map updates and updating is very easy. The touch screen is very responsive. I do a lot of highway driving and I like the fact that it warns me of accidents, traffic jams/slow downs, construction issues, all in real time. It does this through an integrated traffic receiver with subscription free traffic service. Other likes: the lane assistant function for optimal routing and the text to speech functionality.

I disliked the windshield mount though. No fault of Navigon, I just don't like mounting GPS with a windshield mount. I made a custom mount for mine, I'll post a few pics when I can.

To avoid using the windshield mount I found a creative spot for the GPS and it cost me nothing but 20 minutes of time:

As you can see I used an old cassette tape (remember those?) and a dremmel tool to carve out part of the cassette casing. This allowed part of the original mount to bolt up to it. The electrical tape is there just to provide more of a snug fit. Works great, and harder for thieves to spot.

Hey, thanks for the K! Reminds me that I need to do a better job of spreading some K around myself.
