Default Q about non-profit web galleries

Hello,

Asking this here because it concerns the fuzzy zone of ownership/copyright.

I've created a personal gallery on the web to allow friends and family to see some of my pictures. Most of the are, strangely enough, about friends and family. I'm not too worried about those.

But there are a few pictures of strangers that I shot in public parks/spaces. I have no intention of selling any of my images: I'm just putting them there to share them.

Do I have to ask permission? Release forms? If not, is it considered a severe breach of ethics "not" to ask?

Thanks for your inputs!

Loa

I don't think it has anything to do with ownership or copyright. Sounds more like you are concerned with privacy and releases.

I don't see a problem here. As long as you are not using the images to promote your business you should be OK. But you should check with local laws and customs (I'm in the US).

NY Times article that touches on this:

Hello,

Thanks for the input John. I'm not overly worried about laws and such (as it's non-profit), but rather about the ethics. That's why I was curious to know what other photographers here thought about it.

Thanks,

Loa
