Default exclusive rights

hi,
I am new here and have been talking pictures for about 5 years now. Recenlty the tourism dept on my island asked to purchase the exclusive rights to some pics i have of the frigate birds for marketing purposes. Should i sell the rights to these pics? If so can u give me a decent price in U.S $ ? i have sold some pics to a magazine before they paid $50.00 U.S .

any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Chip is the resident expert on this topic, so I'd ask him directly.

In the US, the fair market value of a commercial photograph depends highly on what their end usage is.
In other words, it'll cost more if it were to run in a national magazine, and less if it were for a brochure. The broader the usage, the higher the price.

I can't give you an exact figure for what your images are worth, but I can tell you what I'd charge in a situation like this. (This is given that the image is expertly captured, exposed well, and has no obvious flaws like noise or poor color balance).
The price would be $1,000, and they could pick their 10 favorites from the pile.
They would then own the images free and clear.

Again, this is just a suggestion based on what I normallly charge for this type of work, and not a reflection of your marketplace.
Hope that gives you a good starting point.
