I wouldn't be flattered to have Bob Dylan give me an attribution, or upset if he didn't. Many beginning artists use any material as subjects. We can't expect amateur artists to have professional ethics.

It almost looks like it's just a paint by numbers deal. Take someone elses image project it on canvas and paint what's already there. This is not his work but a painted copy of someone elses.

This is basically the same as the numerous bands that have done covers of "All Along the Watchtower", not to mention other songs, and Dylan was paid royalties for those copies.

Another point, don't people learn by imitation? I see nothing wrong with copying another photographers style to learn. However, it is up to me to use what I learn to create my own style, not merely copying.

I think you guys are missing the point.
Quote:
Life can imitate art. Art can imitate life. But when art imitates art, it's called plagiarism. And you can bet your butt that if someone did a Dylan cover song or sampling, he'd be the first to lawyer up and ask for royalties. |

I wouldn't care. And I think there's nothing wrong with copying other peoples' artwork. Well much better if he created his own style and not just copied everything. Bob Dylan paintings may be copied from photographs but I think he just drew on his inspiration to paint the paintings.

Good artists borrow... great artists steal.
