An interesting email exchange is below; while I'm sorry that Amanda didn't get into the book (with my image, anyway), I've got to hold my ground. I wish other photographers would hold their ground as well...If guys wouldn't be giving the world away at the prospect of just being in print, I would have an easier time paying my bills. People die of exposure every day. ==== (To Amanda): Hello, You submitted an e-mail to Lowrider Magazine recently and we wanted to see if we can use one of your photos to run in our "Model Search / Girls Next Door" feature. To do this, we will need the following: One high-resolution image of you in a .jpg or .tif format Your name (as you want it printed in the magazine), city and state A formal statement or release giving us permission to use / publish the photo in the magazine. Please send this information no later than Wednesday, July 19th to this e-mail address: VoloProductions@hotmail.com If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me back as soon as possible. Also, if you have already been setup for a photo shoot with one of the magazine's photographers, please disregard this message and congratulations! Sorry for the short notice but our deadline is at the end of this week. We do thank you for your time and interest! Sincerely, Dustin "Volo" Pedder Lowrider Magazine - Photographer/Writer VoloProductions@hotmail.com http://www.lowridermagazine.com ==== Hi Dustin - I understand that you've asked Amanda Jilesse for an image for publication in your feature. To help me better prepare the image and a proper invoice and license for you, please tell me your preferred image format, your preferred level of post-production correction, your preferred orientation, intended position and size within the publication (full- or half- page, etc), and your intended usage (single use or multiple use; if multiple use, please project those uses to the best of your ability). For your review, please find attached a low-res sample of the image that has been chosen. I will have the image, invoice and license ready for you within two hours of receipt of your reply. Do you require a copy of the model release attached to the license? Cheers and talk soon! Jon Howard | five grand creative ImagingMarketingManagement Portland Dallas Vancouver ==== Hello Jon, Thanks for your quick response. The image should be in a high- resolution format (preferrably 300 dpi). This in a .jpg format, in any orientation, and in at least a half-page size, will suffice. This is to be used in the "Girls Next Door / Model Search" feature and is open to all models, amateur to professional, free of charge. There is no pay to the model, nor is there pay given on use of the picture, however, the winner will probably be a featured model in the following issue. Please note that not all submissions will be ultimately used / published in the magazine. Thanks Jon and cheers to you, -V- ==== (Sent image and license files) ==== Hi Jon, How did you want Amanda's city and state credited? Also, on your license agreement, I can't gurantee that your copyright notice will be printed with the picture when it is published in the magazine. Can you change your license agreement? I'm sorry for the inconvenience... If this is a problem, just let me know... I apologize for the troubles. If it's not a problem, please re-send a revised version of the agreement. Thanks Jon, -V- ==== Hi Dustin, my apologies - please identify her as Amanda Jilesse, Portland, OR. As for the copyright notice, because you have stated that I will not be receiving financial consideration for the license, notice is absolutely required and is not negotiable. The only other acceptable alternative would be page-numbered credit on the masthead as a contributor. One or the other (or both) must be guaranteed. I will amend the license to include page-numbered masthead credit if that is acceptable. If listing the actual copyright verbage is the issue (it hasn't been an issue with publishers in the past), a generic photo credit by-line on the page containing the image is acceptable and I will amend the license to that end. Thanks Dustin...Cheers and talk soon! Jon Howard | five grand creative ImagingMarketingManagement Portland Dallas Vancouver ==== Hi Jon, I completely understand where you're coming from. That is the profession your company is in so it only makes sense that you're given some kind of recognition. Unfortuately, I just can't gurantee that Primedia will go for that... I think it would be best if we pass on this opportunity at this time. I wish you, your company, and of course Amanda, continued success... Thanks for the good communication Jon... It was appreciated. Take care, -V- ==== For the record - this guy is full of llama. I've been published in Primedia publications a few times, and this has *never* been an issue. They've either paid or credited me (or both) for submissions. In hindsight, I noted that this guy is also a photographer. Makes me go "hmmm." I also went "hmm" when I realized that he was emailing me from a Hatemail account rather than a Primedia or Lowrider account. __________________
