This is an attempt at getting a sort of butterscotch effect on my lovely old Tokai tele. The body was originally a bit battered, so I stripped it using a mouse sander and smoothed out any wrinkles. From my understanding, this model was built using Alder, so the grain is not that obvious. It still shows through nicely enough though.

I used a white tint and then a yellow tint (nitro based). Found it quite tricky to get an even coverage, but all in all it looks quite nice. Maybe a bit lighter than I expected, but it should darken a bit over time?

The headstock - note the 'cheeky' attempt at the Fender font. Shortly after this guitar was released Tokai were forced to change it after some legal threats from Fender.

I bought this one from a guy in Japan for a few hundred £. It's an 81 or 82 model - to me the best of the early Tokai's.

Hey, I just noticed. There's something seriously wrong with that guitar. Everything is on the wrong side!

Yeah, it goes with the guitarist .

Since I did this I've changed the bridge to a nice 'boutique' (i.e. expensive) Callaham. Gives a lot more sustain.

Also fitted some similarly 'boutique' knobs - don't ask how much they cost!
