Activating Windows 8 Enterprise

Posted 10-16-2013 at 12:33 PM by JDArt

If you installed a version of Windows 8 Enterprise from MSDN, as I did, and you find that you cannot enter your activation ID, follow these steps:

1. Open a command prompt as Admin, and type this command:

slui 3

2. Press Enter.

You'll then get the familiar Windows Activation screen, where you can enter your activation key.

Image editing in the cloud

Posted 10-24-2011 at 07:49 PM by JDArt

Image editing in the cloud seems counterintuitive. After all, image editors require some serious horsepower on the desktop, and internet connections would seem to limit the responsiveness. But Picnik proves that cloud-based image editing can be fast, fun, and reasonably powerful.

A tabbed-based interface makes it easy to load, edit, and save photographs. Rotating images, cropping, and resizing are all simple to perform. Even sharpening and red-eye removal are possible. Perhaps best...

Digital camera presets

Posted 09-23-2011 at 09:26 PM by JDArt

Most digital cameras come with presets for taking pictures in specific lighting conditions – such as night, portrait, landscape, and macro. Use the presets when lighting conditions are difficult. The night preset optimises your camera for low-light shooting, landscape for distance, and macro for close-up photography. Portrait mode provides just enough depth of field for people, while making backgrounds slightly blurry.

Reboot your computer automatically each night

Posted 09-20-2011 at 07:21 PM by JDArt

Windows comes with a little-known application called Shutdown.exe. You can use it in conjunction with Windows’ built-in scheduler either to shut down or restart your PC at any specified time.

To set this up, open the Start menu, type “scheduled tasks” and click the first entry that appears. Or, if you’re using Windows XP, open the Control Panel and double-click the Scheduled Tasks icon. Once the task scheduler starts, add a new task. When, in the course of adding the task, you are asked...

An error occurred communicating with netflix (tivo)

Posted 05-14-2011 at 05:12 PM by JDArt

If you have this problem, here's how to fix it:

1. Log on to Netflix and deactivate your Tivo from the play instantly section.

2. Deactivate your Netflix service via the TiVo menu.

3. Reboot the TiVo.

4. Reactivate Netflix in Tivo by going into the Video On Demand menu and following the instructions to get a new activation key.

Now everything should work again.

Google tricks

Posted 12-29-2010 at 06:29 PM by JDArt

Did you know that the Google search box can be used for much more than searching? You can also use it as a calculator, for instance. Type 5*14, for example, to see how Google returns an answer instantaneously. The search box can also act as a currency conversion tool. Type "50 dollars in euros" and watch what happens. Need the local weather? Type "weather in," followed by your city. A five-day forecast should appear in no time.

Speed up Windows startup

Posted 07-11-2010 at 04:31 PM by JDArt

You can speed up the time it take Windows to start by controlling which applications load at startup. Hold down the Windows key and tap the letter "R" to open the Run dialog box. Type "msconfig," without the quotation marks, and press Enter. In the resulting System Configuration dialog box, click the Startup tab, and uncheck any application you can do without.
