Photographing a Sound File!!!

Posted 05-30-2013 at 11:18 AM by Kitsi

I love photography challenges because often, they cause the photographer to really dig in and come up with their own personal representation of the topic that will stand out, above and beyond, other submissions. Most often, this results in personal improvement in the skill.

Personal improvement is always my own goal. I don't compete with other photographers, I simply enjoy their work. I compete with my own photography. I want to continually get better and better. I epitomize the...

Comments, Critiques = growth and improvement.

I am very happy to have discovered Photo Camel. I am on a daily journey to challenge my skill at presenting quality photographs. I find that in order to accomplish any growth in my skill at all, comments from viewers geared toward improvement is absolutely necessary.

I know how tough this is. When I look at a photograph presented by another, I tend to shy away from expressing improvement thoughts in fear that it will be viewed in a negative manner. I am sure I am not alone in...

The Least of the terns

Posted 05-07-2012 at 10:33 AM by NewMexiKen

We often joke that Florida has two seasons, hot and hotter. We also generally have a dry fall and winter season that gives way to a wet and humid summer. Although our mangoes and avocados put out inconspicuous blossoms, south Florida experiences no explosion of color to mark the onset of the vernal equinox. The mockingbirds sing all year around, though their tempo and volume picks up just as the Palm Warblers depart to breed in far northwestern Canada.

Up north, robins herald...

Canon FL 55mm f/1.2 lens onto EOS cameras

Posted 12-03-2011 at 01:40 PM by jcc

"Why would you want to do such a thing?", you may ask. Simple. This legacy lens is solidly built, has superb optics (even when wide open), and does not cost an arm and a leg. I've had the pleasure of shooting with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM — the lens exhibits marshmallow-like sharpness wide open, and the ultrasonic motor leaves much to be desired (it's REALLY slow for a USM). So, I decided to look for an alternative lens within the same focal range.

That's when I stumbled upon the...

My new gear and birds in my "fake hammock"

Posted 09-21-2011 at 12:05 PM by NewMexiKen

The path that leads to to our favorite birding patch is only a few paces outside the entrance gate to our subdivision. However, we must reach the gate by walking in front of about two blocks of residences. Clothed in our rugged garb, we accept quizzical stares from passing motorists as they bring their kids to school or head for the office, all dressed up. We are often recognized as birders, and have acquired some legitimacy by answering questions from neighbors, such as "Did you notice that...

Hazards of Bird Photography

Posted 08-22-2011 at 03:57 PM by NewMexiKen

Birding and wildlife photography, as spectator sports, are usually not considered very hazardous activities. Oh, I've stepped on yellow jacket tunnels, bumped my head against hornet nests, stood on fire ant hills, suffered itchy poison ivy rash and chigger bites, tripped over old barbed wire fences and battled deer flies and mosquitoes, but... I'm getting ahead of myself, so let's start at the beginning.

Back in Illinois, illness had curtailed my outdoors activities and caused...
