I was shooting a World War II reenactment for an assignment and was walking through the camps when I came across this individual who was playing his accordian. When I walked up to him and brought my camera up the sun poked through the clouds and illuminated just his head and shoulders. I wanted to re-meter but liked the idea of a darker image with just his face highlighted.
I was told that when people take photos of the reenactors they often go into character and this individual was portraying a soldier who knew the war was lost and was tired, lonesome and longing for home and found solice with his accordian. The fact that he was portraying an SS officer made it even more interesting as one would not think they would be this way. __________________

Excellent picture with very nice light. I would not change a thing other than maybe using a film filter to make it look like a real B/W film with some grain. I dont know what the WWII film was typically but it would be fun to get a filter to look like it.

Very moody shot... You captured the theme nicely....love the pipe and its shadow.
The white speck under the left facing eye does pull at my attention, I would burn or clone that. ![]() Nice Work.. Kat |

I think that somehow, just as shot, you have managed to reproduce the exact look I imagine a single frame from a 1940's era movie would look. I 100% agree with Kat about the white spot under the eye.
As to SS men, well we think of them today as monsters, but remember while they were away fighting, German cities were being destroyed by Allied bombers. Even monsters love their families. |
