Thank you! I was hoping when I took the picture that you would be able to see some of the giraffe's print and fur...but, when I got the image off my camera, I felt that the image looked great the way it was.

Did you make the original as a RAW data file or a JPEG?

If you made it as a RAW file you can bring out the giraffe's print with the fill slider. Failing that you could use the dodge tool on a JPEG if the dark parts aren't blocked.

What is a RAW data file?

Some cameras can record the image without losing any of the information. This is called RAW. It does use a large amount of memory.
Most cameras use JPEG which uses less memory but the camera processes the information in such a way that "unnecessary " information is discarded.

What is a RAW data file?
You're no 'dumb', you're uneducated which is entirely different.
A RAW data file is all the information your camera's image sensor recorded.

A JPEG image file is what's left after a RAW file has been compressed and edited.
The highest quality JPEG file only contains 1/3 to 1/4th the information that was in the RAW file.
That seriously reduces the possibilites for editing.

As it turns out ALL RAW data files have to be converted to some other format to be displayed on the web or to be printed. They are usually converted to JPEG or TIFF.

Okay, I see difference now. Thanks! ...I just have a Canon PowerShot SX110IS ...I don't know that it does that fancy 'RAW' thing.

Thank you, Rense.
