I did this one by working on Anne's Blue outfit - which is about Mid Grey - as you suggested. With the Gray Scale to match the Gray in the Blue area - in the b/w matching area, the match worked well. It turned out to be about Value 3 or so on the G S/V F Card. I UP CLICKED about 4 or 5 clicks. I used 300 dpi @ 3600 X 2700 pixels on my work file. It is unfortunate the fellow doing the image - missed the fellow walking through the image. My thanks for the suggestion. |

Norm; I just checked something. Your B&W big light looks a little gray because it registers a brightness of 223. Pure white is 250-255. Bringing the light up to 250+ really brightens the highlights of the whole image without making it look too contrasty. Of course your monitor & mine are probably set different (preference) from each other & you might be seeing pure white where I see very light gray. The histogram is the only sure way to know when a tone reaches a value of white or black. Hope this helps in some way or other.
In my opinion (for what it's worth) bright lights at night do look real bright............tw |

I purposely gave the white of the light a VALUE 8 as most whites - lights and clothes - register that VALUE on Painting Reproductions with the GRAY SCALE CARD when in b/w check and match. I prefer to have it slightly darker so as to not draw one's eyes to that and miss the rest of the image as often happens witlh bright lights. Maybe I could give it VALUE 9, but I think it suits VALUE 8 when the market is fairly dark in that area anyway. I have been checking painting reproductions well now to see how colors and tones match my GRAY SCALE CARD - both in in b/w - and have learned quite a bit about what each color and tone gives under certain light levels. I hope that helps. |

As our light was quite low, I gave the brlighltest part of the snow a VALUE 8 to keep the dull weather as it was on this one. We cannot have the brightest snow looking like fwhite bond paper on a cloudless July 4 or similar. |

Like the scene at the market, I tried an outside night image to balance the white in a sign to a VALUE in my GRAY SCALE CARD. This time I used a very small white lit sign - just above the car with the tail lights on - as my 'target'. That was given a VALUE 8 - to keep it from overpowering the scene - in my b/w match. We also have to consider that light falls off the further we are away from it - in this case a city block. |

We are just in the door from Sunday services. Anyway - I have a VIEWSONIC 17 round screen. It is a commercial screen that was put out when new screens were being bouglht - and as my earlier one broke down - I took this - a few years ago now. I am really enjoying keeping an eye on my WHITES. Since I started to balance my WHITES (in my b/w matching process) with my GRAY SCALE, I have paid closer attention to how bright my WHITES are - in cam and on here. Also, working with my WHITES seem to give me better skin tones as well - on my fingers. This one I used the white of the bottom of the balcony railing as my WHITE for matching in the b/w match. Have a agood week. No problems about the suggestions. |

We were sitting in the Front Room and a dull light was touching Anne from the Dining Room. With the help of the Gray Scale Card and a Magnifying Glass, I worked on the WHITE of her Shirt Collar to bring this out. I kept texture in her clothes quite decently. Her face has a bit of the dark look like a Rembrandt or similar on my screen. I could have used a WHITE cloth to touch up the shadow side, but left it as is. |

This 'grab' image was done - at lunch - at the shoppling center. I introduced a pad of white paper ( as my gray match point) - and later cropped out. One thing I like here is the accuracy of the skin on her fingers and such. Also, the white of the straw. If I no white tone is in the image, I am keeping a pure white pad of paper (for notes as well) to introduce for matching and cropping from the final version . I was so concentrating on her, that I did not see the white above her, but it turned out well in any case - for no flash and room lights only. |

Norm, I think that photo of Ann in the pink sweater is one of the best I've ever seen of yours. It really does look like a painting.
