Tone looks much better in B&W August. Much better crop too. A good example of the importance of post processing. What did you use to get the grain effect?

GIMP has a great plugin for black and white conversion. i use it for that purpose; though i use PS cs3 for most other tasks.
it allows you to select different types of films to convert to. in this case i believe that i used Ilford 100. it spans the gambit from agfapan 25 to ilford sfx. heres a link to the plugin...(it's actually a script-fu command) if you use it in 2.4 you have to deselect "add layer" or it won't work. bugs...grrr. i still use 2.17 most often because of the wide range of scripts that work with it, but they have finally come out with the final +1 on 2.4. GIMP also has a plugin that does the best infrared conversion that i have found to date as well. (not used here) |

Great info - thanks. Although I use Linux in my day job at home it's all Mac so the GIMP is not on my plate. Last time I looked though it seemed to be coming along very well (though I still find it a lot slower compared to CS3 - same with you?). Cedric_R the landscape moderator uses GIMP I believe. Maybe we need a GIMP tutorial to try and encourage more open source software for image processing.

GIMP for mac.
they have it for mac too. ![]() yeah, it's slower...but 2.4 is miles faster than any of the previous releases. i'm not as keen on the work environment in GIMP... it just has a few things that i find better results with. i open it up once every few days or so. it got me through the first few months until i got cs3. |

Yeah I know - but as they also have Photoshop for the Mac then I'll stick with that
. Maybe if CS3 was released on Linux I'd change OS, but I'm so used to Photoshop workflow that I can't change. |

i know how that goes.
if i wouldn't have started with GIMP in the interim, i wouldn't have bothered. (still no CMYK support either.) __________________
