Default devastation

Just a walking down the beach.

What can be done to improve?

Clearly something happened here with the road, hurricane? They tell a story but seem to be a tad dark to me.

Any interesting links which u think I could compare to? Is there some sort of standard on well exposed B&W's? It was a massive storm that destroyed multiple beaches along Natals coastline. Some people drove down their driveways in the morning only to find there was no road anymore. Id be a bit skittish about living here any further.

The first problem here is its low key look at the histogram in the bottom right of the origanal picture all the tone is filled up on the left, you can correct this more with levels but I opted for a quick curves adjustment.
this can be done woth almost editing software and shoule be done before the conversion, looking at the second histogram i grabbed the top right corner abd pulled in some high key then pushed the mid curve to give some mid tones.
I havent done a great job here but wanted to show that with some tweaking it can be improved.
I hope Rense sees this as he is the resident expert in my eyes.

Actaully I reduced the higlhlights and increased contrast several times, and added fake noise for atmosphere and mood. I shot these on a normal overcast day some time after the event but i wanted them to appear as if it were shot in one of those backwater towns where no cop will hear u scream. But looking at it, I didnt make it disturbing enough. still looks way too everyday.

"Dont live here. Dont surf here" was intended to be the brightest most visible part of the scene.
