Default April BW Assignment/Challenge: Depth of Field (DoF)

Last month we examined PoV, this month lets look at depth of field (DoF) and how it impacts the images we capture. For those unfamiliar with DoF, a quick goggle search of the phrase “Depth of Field” will reveal a wealth of information. This month’s challenge will be to generate a BW image in which DoF plays a key role in presenting your message to the viewer. Each entry, or entries, should include a BW image, a statement of what your message is, i.e., what you wanted the viewer to “see” in the image, and your explanation of how DoF played a role in helping the viewer see your message. At least one round of Karma will be given by me to all entries. Hopefully, others will award Karma to entries that appeal to them.

I used a Canon 85 f1.2 at f/3.5 to concentrate the viewer's attention on the cat's face and the intensity of his interest in what's going on around him. The image's title is, "Where's my dinner?" The relatively narrow DoF helps tell the story of a hungry cat.

A nice shot and perfect example for this month's challenge Kelly.
Will have to put away my small format camera and get out there with my APS-C gear for some shots here.

As an element of a GTCU game, these had to
be easily recognizable for use toward the end
of the game. Given the repro ratio, f:32 it is !

A innovative and appropriate use of DoF to control what the viewer sees. Thanks for being the first brave sole to take on this challenge, Golem, I thought this would an easier task than lasts month's challenge, but judging from the response maybe I was wrong.

I like to keep my whole subject in focus. That means the background
hasta be dealt with. The background is informative or the shot is not
worth recording. This is just about the way I like it, some separation
but enuf background "data" to provide an environment. It's f:5.6 at a
classic portrait FL. It says "I work here and I like it". Simple enuf.

This one works well, too, Golem. Thanks again for a great contribution to this challenge.

Another test shot with blue sensitive X-ray film. While certainly not a flattering emulsion for the fairer sex, I think this shot demonstrates what limited DOF does for (or to) an image.

That and the characteristic sharp center quickly going soft signature of the Petzval lens exaggerates the effect i think. This is about a 30-40% crop from the 4x5 negative.

This is a great use of DoF, I am wondering what lens and F stop settings you used for this one? Thanks for your contribution to this challenge.
