The problem with mist is that you can't get any detail in it at a distance. You end up with shots where the sky is just white at best (burnt sometimes). I also do mist/fog shots, but I'm never satisfied with them. I think this photo would be better in square format (lose the top 1/3). Doing that you keep the interesting part of the fog and your subject.
I'm not used to square format because I've never shot in 6x6 or other square film formats, but I find square photos more symmetrical and more "quiet" than the usual 35mm format. Square format makes me think of silence. I think that works well here. If course, cropping to square has the disadvantage of bringing your subject bang in the vertical middle. But I think it works ok here. It emphasises the fact that the subject is contemplating the sea quietly by moving it away from power points. I hope I'm not talking rubbish. |

I just tried your suggestion Cedric_r and it does look good. The person is not as centered as one might think. Give it a shot ronb359 and see what you think. I did a 400 x 400 pixel crop directly from the bottom removing the extra from the top.

It think it helps the image, but my wife said she liked it the original way. But then again, what does she know. :

The woman in the first image is smaller in proportion to the scene. I think that gives the picture a different felling. As if the woman is being overwellmed by the vastness of the scene (fog). While I agree that the second image has better "composition" I think it also changes the fell of the photo. Maybe that is why she prefers the first one?

I prefer the first photo: gives a more solitude feeling.
What I don't like is that one the bars of the bridge is on the right side on the same height as a line in the jacket of the woman, and then suddenly on the left side the two don't meet anaymore. |
