Interesting shots, although I think the title should be "Pathway in the rocks" since it looks like rock formations with sand in the cracks. But I can see where you used the lines of the sand in these pictures. I think a higher contrast would have worked better, maybe even taking it almost to a bas reliefe style.

ent2b, very cool!! (oh and glad to see you here too, my old FM friend). I like the grainy feel of it.

Ent, bas relief is a very high contast black and white. In fact most if not all of the middle tones are removed, leaving just the highlights and shadows. It's also called pen and ink, very much like a pen and black ink drawing on a white piece of paper. Some subjects that already have a high contrast to them, like your rocks and sand, work well with this method. It's easy to do with one of the filters in Photoshop, but back in my film and darkroom days, I use to do it with litographic film and create a positive from the negative, then create a negative from that, then a positive, etc., going back and forth until I had created a very high contrast negative image, which I then printed on photographic paper.

I hope that makes sense.

I like the second shot the best of the two. Has nice lines to it and the all over gritty sort of feeling to it works. You sort of don't know if it is film noise or sand and the thought it could be sand blowing or something makes it feel more desolate. I think it was a good idea to do the red cast on the building and the neutral on the rocks on your first picture. For me, I think I'd rather the building be less or more clear...where it is at my eyes sort of water a bit trying to focus on it and it is hard to drag my eyes down to the interesting rocks. That's why I like the second shot better...not as much struggle for me to sit and study.
